I mean there’s still plenty of time for them to fuck it up, but last I read, the reconciliation infrastructure package makes those child payments permanent, which would be a huge winner to run on.
No it makes it till 2025. You can’t make something permanent in reconciliation. That said it will be super unpopular to kill it after it’s been in place 4 years.
But once republicans lock up power with Jim crow round two they can do whatever the fuck they want because they will not lose all three branches for decades. Only a massive economic collapse with them holding all three branches could undo that
Why 2025? I thought reconciliation provisions lasted 10 years? Like the Trump tax cuts are for 10 years from 2018 iirc.
Probably struggling to pay for everything for a very long time when you got Dems very resistant to truly taxing the rich.
Next budget cycle. Every cycle is 4 years.
to be more specific, the President submits his budget every year, but congress allocates money 4 years in advance.
Fwiw the 21% corporate tax rate they did in 2017 is permanent. You can make things permanent with reconciliation as long as you appropriately cook the books so it looks like they’re paid for. That said the last I heard was 5 years for the child tax credit but I’ll admit I haven’t looked into the details on the latest proposal.
Why do they need to cook the books?
Just raise taxes on all these fucksticks that made 11 figures during the pandemic.
If you’re actually raising revenue it’s easier obviously. I’m just saying you can make things permanent through reconciliation if you really want to; there’s no rule against it.
Genuine question. How do you guys do it? How can you pay attention day after day to this? I haven’t ingested anything political since January-ish, and I mean a 100% shut down. All Twitter feeds unfollowed, all political feeds here set to “normal,” and a complete abandonment of any kind of 24/7 news station. It’s an incredibly freeing thing to do.
But I’m sitting eating lunch at a restaurant and I’m bored so I thought I’d take a look at the Presidency thread. Yikes.
We got what we got. I voted for him and I even quite rudely said “fuck off” to people here who said they wouldn’t vote for him the general, but I also said that Biden is going to prevent anything truly awful from happening, and then we’ll continue to move into permanent Republican rule.
I’m not asking how you guys keep on with politics as any kind of judgement. Politics is addicting as hell, particularly when you’re dealing with people as evil as Republicans. But I would genuinely recommend taking a break from it if you can.
I also get that I ask this from a position of safety as a white middle class dude. But there’s nothing left that can be done. The writing is on the wall and it’s just a matter of time. Enjoy a few sunny days this summer without the news cycle reminding you of the awfulness that is this country. Save whatever money you can and if possible, prepare for a permanent exit when the time comes. Give yourselves a mental break for a while rather than enduring this daily torture. Again, no judgment at all because I’ve been you. I’ll continue to fill in the circle next to the most left candidate come election time, but all the rest is just not for me anymore.
Tldr edit: does the fact that y’all in this thread are still paying attention mean that you think this country can still be saved?
Follow up questions for Joe - should the government do anything about it? Has your administration done anything about it? Have you done anything about it?
Just like in poker, I can suppress my emotions when looking at results.
That’s a great trait, and one that I don’t possess.
Going to war with Facebook is a smart play, surprised Biden has the stones for it.
How can the executive branch possibly do anything to rein in fb? Strongly worded letters?
Drone strikes seem to work in foreign countries.
Honestly partly loving the community, partly this is kind of like a hobby for me almost.
I think I follow along constantly hoping for good news, a sign that we aren’t completely doomed. Like I check every day hoping manchin and cinema agree to partially adjust the filibuster just for voting rights and pass something that will save us. Foolish of me but I live on hope.
If I took a break it wouldn’t matter. I would still worry.
I guess now that. Vaccinated I should look for something healthy to replace my time here, but I don’t know what that could be after work/before work/at work.
On the weekends after work I’m usually getting laid so at least I have that
From what I’ve heard the executive actually has a ton of power with anti trust, they don’t even need congress.
I do agree it sets a scary precedent go try and force social media to do what you want, the right move is to break them up.
Republicans definitely don’t want to go the antitrust route of breaking up large companies though so maybe we will be safe
But breaking them up ma bell style does nothing, I mean so now there’s an Instagram Inc? OK? FB itself (the blue app) needs to gutted in the way they do business now and I don’t see it, at all.
GOP dipshits have been beating the “we need to regulated BIG TECH” drum and now sleepy joe has them on their heels
