It wasn’t just VA and NJ. Dems got wiped locally all over the country, the national news media just didn’t report it well. Dems went down in local races all over NY for example. Republicans picked up city council seats in Brooklyn FFS. Democrat District Attorneys around the country (some running on police reform, some not, it didn’t matter) got wiped as well. I’m not saying it’s an “end of the world” situation. I think it just shows that people just vote party line now based on the national environment, and turn out based on that same environment. The campaigns don’t seem to matter much. This is why primaries are more important now if you want to effect change.
Agree with your posts, we’re polarized to the point that for all the insistence over various campaigns doing right or wrong things, it didn’t matter much if at all. Some progressive stuff lost in progressive friendly territory. Fact is biden’s approval ratings currently suck and in that environment, R’s are going to win nationally period. I think they’d win the popular vote right now (sans Trump), which is definitely WAAF
expect anything else from politico?
I don’t read politico enough to have any expectations.
lolololol look me in the eyes!
I mean she didn’t have much of a choice, Manchin and Cinema certainly don’t give a shit about sinking both bills. So while they had leverage, only a tiny amount really.
This. Just look at the NJ Senate race where some dipshit who had literally no campaign beat the highest ranking Dem in the state. Policies, record, and campaign matter much less than they used to.
Got em
Hahaha nope
Though such a jury could issue subpoenas, Ms. Willis would need to return to a regular grand jury to seek criminal indictments.
But the county has a vast backlog of more than 10,000 potential criminal cases that have yet to be considered by a grand jury
Oh.
But the county has a vast backlog of more than 10,000 potential criminal cases that have yet to be considered by a grand jury
Holy shit that’s ridiculous, apparently this is largely due to covid:
Fulton County Manager Dick Anderson said the best estimate is that it will take 36 months and cost at least $60 million to solve the problem.
When the pandemic started, Brasher said, 10% of the jail’s population hadn’t been formally charged, meaning indicted.
Now? It’s 50-50.
So I guess the right to a speedy trial only applies once you’ve been indicted? It seems like the spirit of the 6th amendment is to have people move through the justice system quickly and not languish for years under the constant threat of eventual prosecution.
I guess some of these cases are eventually going to have to be dismissed due to statute of limitations. This is probably good for drug crimes and bad for real crimes.
I would guess that the vast majority of the people stuck in limbo are not white, so they don’t really have rights.
In law school, when you learn the “rules” that supposedly protect defendants, it is apparent basically instantly that they only apply to people with money.
The Supreme Court has said that if you can’t make bail, you can be held for longer than the maximum sentence for the crime you’re accused of. Just absolute horseshit.
Most states suspended speedy trial rights when COVID hit.
I know CA at least handle this by releasing most people awaiting trial who didn’t do violent crimes. I think at least.
Imagine buying a Joe Manchin book.
Seriously what the hell.
His campaign will buy them at full price.
this reads like someone who perhaps won’t be running
He said he won’t be running and I don’t think he will either. He has no shot regardless of how he runs.
He is pulling all this bullshit for his retirement lobbying gig
This seems significant. How much effect would three months worth of a very different economic story have had on the election?
