Serious question that I don’t know the answer to: What happens if there is no Chief Justice (as there was for a few weeks in September 2005)?

The person in the Chief Justice role? No.
Roberts wasn’t even on the SC when he was nominated (Well, he was initially to fill O’Connor’s position. Then he got a “promotion” before his confirmation vote when Rehnquist died.)
I must be misremembering that SC dramady with Rockford from a hundred years ago…

If a D is impeached they take the senior justice. If an R is impeached NO CHIEF JUSTICE NO TRIAL and it’s too late in this presidency to nominate a chief justice.

Senate Rs have a lot more potential control over the trial than some of y’all seem to realize. This makes a pretty credible argument that 51 Senators can overrule Robert’s on a whole host of evidentiary and witness decisions, and they can also exercise a ton of influence over the length of the trial.
I just had a prophetic vision. Lisa Page will know for a fact about multiple super shady illegal things he definitely did, but will stay silent about it because of her sense of professionalism. Meanwhile george will make up a bunch of shit out of whole cloth and tell everyone and it’ll stick
