That’s fine, but the point I disagreed with from the expanded quote:
I’d also bet any amount of money that if Trump isn’t on the ballot in the future, he’s not voting. I bet there are a lot of people like that out there. These people are the true deplorables. All in on the Trump train and if the train goes off the track, so do they.
That’s a different discussion than saying even if all of those people vote, it’s only 22% of the population. Unless I misunderstand you…
Yup. It’s impossible to overstate how important it is for the Democrats to unrig the political system (and if possible rig it a big in our favor) after curb stomping Donald in 2020. There need to be federal laws about there being excess voting capacity, everyone being allowed to vote, and how districts get drawn.
If I were the Democrats I’d be trying to disenfranchise voters over the age of 60 by making everyone register in some way that required a minimal level of mobile phone savvy.
I mean maybe someone else can come along and rile up the base in the same way but I don’t see it. Trump is like once in a generation deplorable asshole.
I will say we are very lucky Trump is 73 and not 53.
That is a good point. I guess that just shows how low my opinion is of Trump. To me, he’s a garden-variety deplorable who also happens to be a phenomenal showman. So for me, the idea that he won’t be easily replaced is less persuasive. I don’t see anything special about him. The only thing I believe has been holding back someone from being better at Trumping than Trump was the belief that no one could possibly get away with this much.
It would be a MASSIVE pay cut for him - and there are a fair number of people who would look at the job and say “no thanks” - Hunter Thompson had a good quote about what it takes to run for the job -
“The whole framework of the presidency is getting out of hand. It’s come to the point where you almost can’t run unless you can cause people to salivate and whip on each other with big sticks. You almost have to be a rock star to get the kind of fever you need to survive in American politics.”
More ominously -
“There is a sense of muted desperation in Democratic ranks at the prospect of getting stuck—and beaten once again—with some tried and half-true hack like Humphrey, Jackson, or Muskie…" - or Biden, I suppose.
