Early on, yes but few people were making it through the entire wall by the 70s. The wall had a crazy number of deterrents along with it. It was like the Ninja Warrior of border crossing. Most who did escape didn’t escape per se. They either got a permit to leave and never came back or got to West Germany via another country.
In short, walls are bullshit because where there’s a will, there’s a way and some escape attempts were truly ingenious.
