There’s a whole lot going on in this post. Almost every paragraph is a separate argument. I think you’re right that we should agree to disagree as our disagreements are indeed quite deep.
Just so you don’t think I’m ignoring your interesting post, I’ll say a few things without defending any of them:
the metaphysics of freedom is almost always a red herring. Nothing of importance hinges on this type of freedom (outside of a few narrow questions in criminal justice, imo).
Telling someone with power, connections, and money to carry on doing something they used to do is not the same as telling, for example, a single mother living through generations of poverty to bootstrap her way to financial freedom. “Laziness is a capitalist myth” is quite a radical position. Hard work (on the right things!) is the entire point of life.
You say we shouldn’t rag on John for failing to do something of great importance and social benefit because he might secretly be doing something more important. I don’t see why this follows. I guess he might be, but we don’t know either way. I think it’s fair to say, “Sir, you have the talent, connections, and power, please help us, just like you used to do.”
You worry that the Daily Show might have been harmful to his own well-being. Again, this is very specific speculation. Maybe you know more about him than I do, in which case, fair enough. But even if it were true that the show cost him a lot personally, I don’t see this as a knock-down argument against insisting that he has a responsibility to do it anyway. He has great power to affect positive change for a great number of people. I don’t see why some personal sacrifice is unreasonable.
Thank you. Would you like to continue to discuss this? I am happy to take a break and ponder what you have shared on my own, or for us to explore each other’s positions through further discussion now or at a later time.
If anything he probably agreed to next week so he can get back to focusing on dismantling shit without having the mid-September hearing dangling over his head.
