I’m not a Taibbi-stan, but the tweet with the embedded video of Taibbi’s interview makes this claim: “Matt Taibbi appears on Iranian state-owned, anti-Semitic Press TV, to deny that President Donald Trump ordered Proud Boys and far-fight extremists to ‘stand by,’ at debate”
- Taibbi reads the transcript of the exchange during the debate, including the part where Trump says to “Stand back and Stand by”. So, Taibbi does not deny that Trump said that. At all. The tweet is making it seem that Taibbi is denying the actual words that came out of Trump’s mouth. So, I feel that the tweeter(Matt Dimitri) is being more sloppy with his words than Taibbi is in the video clip.
- Taibbi is making the point that during that exchange when asked if he will denounce white supremacy, Trump responds affirmatively, “Sure”. “tell me who”.
- In the quest to paint Trump as a racist and friendly to white supremacists, this particular debate exchange would not be the evidence that I would think makes the strongest or ironclad case. So, I’m open to Taibbi’s perspective in stating that this particular controversy is in part being manufactured.

I watched the clip too. He’s nitting it up that the general perception from people who didn’t watch the debate is Trump singled out the Proud Boys and told them to stand back and stand by, instead of having the Proud Boys put into his mouth first - as happened.
I think it’s far from a lock that everyone thinks Trump brought up the Proud Boys out of the blue. I sure never did. It’s mostly a strawman argument imo that smacks of the stuff Sklansky does on here - where he tries to divert the argument into some arcane technicality.
Saying “sure” but refusing to say “I denounce…” is a tactic that Trump had planned for this question imo. Sure doesn’t make much of a soundbite, which is the whole point. He can’t piss off his supporters.
Also why is he on Iranian state-owned TV? Do they really deny the holocaust? If so that should be an instant deal-breaker.
