I’ll tell on myself and report that I checked that the Statesman is actually a real Austin newspaper because the site looked so fake.
I moved to the city a few years after the movie was filmed and he really did nail the place and era. It was genuinely like that, and stayed like that up until the late 90’s.

I don’t know about this. It think it’s a reasonable strategy to just nuke the norms and do maximum damage (or I guess, in their minds, good) possible and then let the tsunami come. Especially when the other team might just stick to the norms anyway.
