Bonus question. If I met a random Christian, what question(s) could I ask to determine if he is Evangelical or not. Assume I canāt ask āAre you Evangelical?ā or āWhat church do you belong to?ā. Only questions about their beliefs or their churchās teachings.

It is also common to separate out black evangelical denominations from the evangelical category.
Within both mainline and evangelical Protestantism, the denominations range from conservative to liberal. The difference between these traditions is born out of history. American evangelical denominations grew out of the Great Awakening while mainline denominations pre-dated that period.
So, evangelical and mainline arenāt strictly theological definitions. If you were going to ask one question, you might ask if they are āborn againā. As far as I understand, most evangelicals will say yes and a mainline Protestant will not.
