There’s a case to be made that but for Trump winning the narrowest margins, exactly this would have happened. The party would have leaned into their very worst aspects and ended up giving the presidency to two Democrats for likely four consecutive terms. The Supreme Court would look very different already, and most certainly would have led to dramatic differences in rulings for generations.
I am still holding out hope that we have yet to see the true fallout of Trump winning. That this has awakened many in a way they weren’t before. I just think the first (and last) sign might be whether Trump is crushed in the election. Who cares what GOP senators decided to do? Who cares what everyone says they prefer? We will find out on election day what happens when we take this out of the abstract and voters have to make a direct decision on whether to keep him in office.

I think they couldn’t get a grand jury to accept there was any crime committed, which shows how bad their case was.

Which is weird because Bernie might be the nicest guy in the D field. One of my electability concerns with him is he would prefer to stick to his policy message and attack billionaires than go after Trump. You won’t see anything like that Bloomberg clapback from him regardless of its effectiveness.

But it doesn’t and hopefully never will. And it has some pretty important things right. I can tolerate Islamophobic opinions from old people if it means I won’t go bankrupt getting healthcare.

My understanding is that there’s a track record of toppling Trump-like leaders by sticking to policy and avoiding the mud wrestling.
Who knows with these guys. Maybe Barr feels he has enough to blackmail Trump now and Trump knows it. Trump must be getting squeezed hard by Putin and others with shit on him. I mean real shit, not stuff that nobody cares about like blackmailing heads of state, emoluments or paying off porn stars.
It seems crazy now, but I’m sure she was beyond ecstatic. Also I’m pretty sure that if you asked her in 2016 she definitely would have picked Trump over Cruz. Of course, with hindsight that’s obviously a terrible choice. But I’d say that after the Access Hollywood tape came out pretty much anyone would have snap picked Trump over Cruz as their preferred opponent.
Of course, now we know nothing matters. But I can’t really fault someone for not knowing it then.

There’s a case to be made that Cruz would have beaten her more easily, and thus she was right to want Trump. She was historically unpopular, ran against a historically unpopular candidate and lost. There were probably going to be more NeverTrump voters than NeverCruz voters.
