This ad terrified me. Like, I know there’s another thread where people are all like “Dems should stop talking about social justice issues. It scares white Midwestern voters!” If the Dems abandon social justice issues, the right will swoop in with bad-faith ads like this to poach black voters like this and the Midwest diner patrons are still gonna vote for Trump. This ad is exactly what happens when Dems stop reaching out to black voters and let Republicans make their bad-faith pitch.
Say what you will about Trump, he gives people a positive reason to vote for him. It’s bullshit, but it’s a positive reason. Dems just tell you that the other guy is a Very Bad Man and you should all just stay home on election day. Guess which side wins this battle.
Democrats run ads about how Trump says mean things about girls with small boobs and how he walks around with toilet paper on his shoes. Trump runs ads about reducing prison sentences for drug offenders. Guess who’s gonna win this election? The left just has absolutely no faith in the power of their own ideas; we’re going to spend this campaign talking about how Trump uses swears while he co-opts our own ideas. Democrats are going to lose again, and they deserve it. We need to keep on losing until we decide to fucking stand for something other than civility.
If I say “Dems should run a superbowl ad on reducing prison sentences for non-violent drug offenders,” an army of centrist cheesedicks and YangGang slappies will tell me that we can’t afford to upset people in diners in Ohio. Imagine the outrage from the NYT opinion section if Warren had run that ad.
Instead we just cede the field and let Republicans take up the mantle of social justice. No one is going to pen an NYT op-ed about how Trump is alienating Midwesterners with his social justice commercials. Funny how that works.
We’re all fucked. The Dems have no principles, no ideas, nothing they’re willing to dig in and fight for. They all deserve to lose to senile gameshow hosts until they can get their shit together.
Just imagine the backlash if Bernie had run that ad. Imagine what the NYT would say about it. Instead we’re going to have headlines about how Trump is boldly making inroads with minorities. I’m going to be legit sick when I see tomorrow’s headlines.
Anyone telling you that Dems need to stop talking about social justice issues is a gaslighting assclown and you don’t have time for their bullshit. Either we have solidarity or we are all lost. We have to say that we will go to the mat for black people, Hispanics, women, Muslims, LGBQT, all that good shit. We will hang together or we will hang separately.
I think it was pretty much anti-Trump. That’s the nice thing about midterms when you don’t have the white house. Everybody knows you won’t actually be able to pass anything, so just saying you’ll prevent POTUS from making things worse is all you need. Don’t have to bet bogged down with details.
