Sure they can say motives are unknown, but as they acknowledge in their piece this was clearly to dig up dirt on Hunter to distract from (or even shut down) the push for impeachment. The fact that we didn’t see anything yet implies there was nothing scandalous, though they could always pull a But Her Emails and wait until near-election after Biden wins the nomination.
