The Pets of Unstuck

They make dog and cat treats specifically now, We got our guy these ones and he loved them and had a lot easier time jumping and getting off the bed afterward

Someone brought a pitbull mix to my sister’s birthday party and it was overstimulated and running all over the house. My mom’s french bulldog tolerated it for a few minutes before nipping him on the neck. The pitty calmed down soon after that.

I have always struggled with this problem with stella. She needs near-constant access to me and gets really upset when she can’t. I suspect it’s a little because she imprinted on me before she was weaned, so there’s some dependency issues, but I have had some success recently in curbing this behavior when I just need a good night’s rest (she frequently wakes me in the middle of the night) by providing multiple havens for her throughout the house where she can find food, water, shelter, and most importantly I think for an indoor cat - stimulation.

She has a room full of toys and the more that I add to that room the more I feel she leaves me alone. Cats, especially outdoor barn cats that are forced indoor, are probably really understimulated. They’re extremely intelligent predators and the indoor environment just isn’t really stimulating enough for them, imo. The more I can stimulate her the better these types of problems seem to get. I’ve been leaving doors/windows open for her where she won’t try to escape (she only rarely does anymore but i have to be extremely careful because she’s an escape artist that can tear a screen apart within minutes) just to give her a window to the outside world. cats, at least stella, seem to love just staring outside for hours if they can hear/smell everything. I saw a cool bird feeder product I want to maybe try for her.

Any cat owner knows cats are crepuscular in nature (most active at dawn and dusk) so if you stimulate via play those are the best times.

Cats need a buddy, especially if they spend some time alone during the day.

Not ours. She was PISSED when we got a kitten. They eventually tolerated each other well enough.

15 years later, she’s now the only cat in the house and is now super friendly again.

Saw a big ole bobcat on my walk with the dogs this morning! Guessing he weighed 40 pounds? Physically larger than my 40lb dog, but probably lankier and leaner.

This fella has been popping up in my Ring notifications recently (other people in the neighborhood sharing video, not in my backyard…yet), and this morning I finally caught a glimpse myself. I wasn’t really worried about a confrontation, but that cat would make quick work of a house cat or a small yip dog.

There’s a pretty big mountain range a few miles to the north of me, which is probably where it came down from. Still unexpected to see at 8:30am on a Monday. Rush hour, leaf blowers, construction noises - didn’t seem bothered by any of it.

Yeah, that’s a nice one! I get them over here too. Anytime I see one it’s always walking around like it owns the place. You’re right, they’re not looking for a fight with you or your pet. The coyotes, on the other hand…

I always take the occasion to try to remind people not to use rodenticide if they’re having a mouse problem, because it ends up in the systems of these cats (among other predators).

I always thought bobcats were shy and reclusive. Hell I hiked the whole PCT and never saw one.

I had a female cat a long time ago, I got a second female cat to keep her company, and the older cat was pretty unhappy about it. She never warmed up to the new cat, not in 17 years.

Reminds me of when I was walking my dog in the middle of Toronto this summer and rounded a corner to come face to face with a coyote that was about twice the size of pathetic floof dog. This creature is not going to win a fight with a coyote.

I had the same situation. In retrospect it really sucked for the younger cat and we should’ve re-homed her.

Our chihuahua would rip its face off with one paw tied behind her back.

Or at least so she thinks.

stella’s on a water strike, i stopped giving her fiji out of the bottle and switched to tap, no dice, even tried putting tap water into fiji to trick her,
nope, so she’s been getting a lot of broth and now has seemed to figure out not drinking gets her more broth so i’ve really, really lost this battle. she’s not shown any signs of dehydration so not concerned but jfc

Pasadena. When I saw it, I froze in my tracks and my heart definitely jumped a beat.

Think I’ve posted before, but Samantha would only drink fresh water out of the fridge filter.

My dogs as a kid were Vizlas, can confirm all of that. One of the two would jump our 5’ fence once or twice a week and tear around the neighborhood.

In our case the younger cat was fine, she just had to absorb a couple swats when she got too close. But she got a lot of attention from us, and she seemed happy, so it was ok. My dream of the two cats sleeping in a big pile never materialized though

I wouldn’t get any dog because they are too much work, but there has to be a breed that isn’t as obsessed with killing everything that moves unless it’s a friend.
