The NHL Thread: It’s Back

I think that would just be Panthers/Lightning/Stars/Kings?

Mean temp above 18C is pretty hot. Even Predators and Hurricanes don’t qualify.

You’ll be surprised to find out that professional hockey teams don’t play on frozen lakes, mankind actually has the ability to freeze water now.

Surprisingly not Kings, LA is right on 18 on average from what I can find. Ducks qualify though. So does Vegas.

LOL completely forgot that Las Vegas has a hockey team now.

The Knights’ give the fans a really good Vegas/sports experience, with some nice over-the-top-flourishes.

However, even though I was sitting down in the lower bowl, the fans were some of the rudest, drunkest white trash inbreds I’ve ever encountered at a sporting event, including NASCAR .

Shocking and very sad. This guy was a superstar. He didn’t have a good season in Columbus, but over his career, he was great. Huge tragedy for the family and sad time for the League.

It hasn’t been confirmed yet from what I’ve read but the rumour is that both him and his brother were hit by a car while they were cycling. :(

Just saw a report on CBC, looks like it was a drunk driver trying to pass unsafely.

Their sister’s wedding was today. That’s unspeakably cruel.

More details in this ESPN article.

According to police, a driver of a Jeep Grand Cherokee hit the Gaudreaus from behind while trying to pass an SUV on the right that had moved over to make way for the two pedalcyclists. Police, who responded to the scene at 8:19 p.m., said both Gaudreaus suffered fatal injuries.

The driver is suspected of being under the influence of alcohol and has been charged with two counts of death by auto, police said. They said the investigation is ongoing.

So I’m picturing a two lane road and the one driver moves into the oncoming lane to pass the cyclists and the other accelerates in the same lane and wipes them out? Alternatively a four lane road and the one moves into the left lane and the other comes up behind at high speed and just doesn’t see them?

Looks like a two lane road on Google Maps. Driver in front moves to the left to leave space for the cyclists. Asshole driver is mad that he can’t overtake on the left, so he overtakes on the right and plows right into the cyclists from behind. I wish I could say I’m suprised, but after years of driving in the country I see these dangerous maneuvers shockingly often. It would never in a million years occur to angry country dude that there are cyclists there.

Is “pedalcyclists” some new formal term that gets used for bicyclist? Because I’m envisioning some sort of dual-passenger trike when I read that, not two guys each on their own bicycle.

It’s a defined term in lots of road regulation that just formally defines vehicles that are powered by pedaling (vs. motorized). It’s almost alway a bike but if you drove (for example) a three wheeled pedal powered machie on the public road it would cover that as well.

More details

The crash happened around 8:30 p.m. on Pennsville Auburn Road near Stumpy Lane in Oldmans Township.

Johnny, 31, and Matthew, 29, were traveling north on County Route 551, close to the line on the side of the roadway.

Police say 43-year-old Sean M. Higgins, of Woodstown, New Jersey, was traveling north on County Route 551 in a Jeep Grand Cherokee when he allegedly attempted to pass a slower-moving sedan and SUV.

Police say Higgins entered the southbound lanes of the roadway and passed the sedan.

When he attempted to reenter the northbound lanes, police say the SUV in front of him moved into the middle of the roadway, splitting the north and south lanes in order to safely pass two bicyclists on the right side of the road.

Higgins then attempted to pass the SUV on the right and struck the Gaudreau brothers from behind, troopers said.

According to the police affidavit, the trooper who arrived on the scene detected a “strong odor of alcohol,” and Higgins allegedly told the trooper he had consumed “five to six beers” before the crash.

Higgins allegedly told investigators that he thought the driver of the SUV was trying to stop him from passing. Higgins told investigators that his consumption of alcohol contributed to his impatience and reckless driving, according to the criminal complaint.

The trooper also said Higgins then failed a field sobriety test.

Yep, drunk aggressive impatient driver thinks everyone else on the road is an obstacle in their way, and two people dead. Great job, fucko.

man. it’s pretty dark at 8:30 here in NJ. drunk, blind, and stupid is no way to go through life, much less drive

absolutely gutwrenching. RIP johnny hockey.

Ugh, so sad.
