That was completely unnecessary and FPS by Shanahan. The 49ers have capable RBs to run between the tackles and Samuels always had to sit out the next play to catch his breath.
Why would you want your best receiver on the field on critical downs and give him as many chances as possible at big plays when you can grind him down against linebackers and defensive linemen instead?
I wouldn’t want running back carries or a running back pay check versus a wide receiver.
Same deal with Trent Williams as a move tight end on a run play. It takes Williams off the field for the next play. The upside of having Trent moving isn’t worth not having him for the next play.
