Given the fruit and its distribution, I’m gonna take a shot in the dark and say Chisos Mountains?
Another possibility could be somewhere near the Red River.
I think it might be a nut of some kind. Reminds me of a horse chestnut, but less prickly.
I thought it was an immature Osage orange.

Picture I snapped of a black walnut husk on a forest floor in Ohio. I also thought it was a fruit at first.
How can we figure out where the husk is? Forests are pretty widespread. As are walnuts.
