fyi—I went with LG 10 years ago based on CR’s recommendation and no issues. My mother says its the best washer she’s ever used. Front load, HE. Only issue is that it is slow.

Interesting we had that mildew smell too. We started leaving it open all the time. Is that a front load thing?

I just got a new pair, and noticed that the doors open away from each other. Just luck that our hookups are in the right spot, or is there a standard?

Not sure. What’s super annoying is that the dryer door is actually reversible, but the washer door is not. So the only change I can make would make things worse. (Dryer is on the left, washer is on the right. Both doors open to the left.) If we were smart and observant, we probably could have had the delivery guys swap them when they were installed. But we were 1) first-time homeowners, 2) in a new city dealing with 3 kids under the age of 5, 3) neither smart nor observant.

Our 3 kids are each about 2 years apart. When we moved here in 2010, our youngest had just been born. So 0, 2, and 4. This was a challenging time.

I’ve repaired my dryer 3 times for different things. Dryers are pretty simple.

dryers confirmed simple, there’s really only like 4 parts in there. I’ve had to replace fuses, heating elements, thermostats, etc and they’re all extremely simple. If you can use a multimeter you can figure out what’s busted in about 30 seconds.

My washer and dryer are 21 years old, I finally decided to replace the washer this year (transmission was busted and started leaking oil on the floor, basically wouldn’t spin the agitator unless you leaned on it at exactly the right spot). I bought a speedqueen (waiting on delivery, like everything else in this hell planet, they’re backordered)

It should only need new springs if it’s shaking but if you insist on going for a new one buy German.

I had a dryer die a few years ago. Hired a pro for $75 just to come out. He said it would cost over $300 to fix. So we just paid him the $75 an got a new dryer.

That’s probably not a bad strategy. Or at least, inflate the cost. Let’s say actual costs is $100 for 30 min of work (these guys apply the $75 towards any work that is done). They inflate it to $200. So they get $200 for 30 min or $75 for zero min. Both options are better than $100 for 30 min.

It’s 28° here today & wee Scots can’t take it anymore, arguing everywhere in the town and the weather forecast says it’s going to last for another day or 2, noooooooo, please please please make it rain.
