I really think the anti-ussr/communist propaganda of the 50s-80s did a lot of damage also. An entire generation (boomers) forever brainwashed that anything remotely resembling socialism was the devil itself. Then they spent their time brainwashing their kids. Then AM radio has been hammering away against dangerous commie marxist Dems for decades. It all adds up to the current iteration of the right. Literally turn on Glenn Beck any day of the week. His entire schtick is that there is a marxist plot to destroy America from within and somehow the centrist Dems are at the helm.
It’s completely absurd but all that has happened is the boomers and some of their offspring have turned their hate from the USSR to Dems and leftists in the US because they think they are roughly trying to turn the US into the USSR. No really. They do.

No argument from me there but a huge percentage of people are so far gone I am not sure it matters as far as the right goes. Where it does matter is when you have boomer scum like Chris Matthews and that jackass from Louisiana who I can’t be bothered to remember his name at the moment talking about Bernie and his brownshirts stringing them up in central park. Let’s not forget a huge part of the old Dems suffer from a mild version of the same affliction I talked about above. It’s why Bernie was doomed in hindsight. Old Dems still brainwashed by Reagan era propaganda.

This gets into the difference between democratic socialism and social democracy and how some people would say Bernie is the latter rather than the former.
I’m saying Bernie maybe isn’t really that much of a socialist even though he identifies as a socialist, but he likes the reaction he gets from diehard capitalists when he says he is a socialist.
