Oh yeah, politics for sure. The big lie and the insurrection that followed did spook a lot of longtime donors though, and Mitch is trying to show that they’re not the creeps that they are.

Gonna steal a take that Dave Weigel had a while ago: Watergate was probably an extreme anomaly as far as the way presidential scandals play out in America. We talk about Watergate a lot and revisit it because it’s a comforting story of the system working the way it’s supposed to and both sides booting out a corrupt president. The reality is that presidential malfeasance will normally play out like Iran-Contra or Trump’s shenanigans where there was clear misconduct but no political will to toss out a sitting president.
Watergate was a weird situation where they had smoking-gun proof of the POTUS planning crimes on tape and Republican senators with just barely enough integrity to move to convict. Even then, damned if they didn’t try every bad-faith trick to try to stonewall the whole thing. Like, they made sure the only guy who could transcribe the tapes was an 80-year old dude with a serious hearing problem, lol.

If they could get 10 R to agree to the stimulus package they could do it another way; but since Rs won’t do it, this is the only mechanism they can use to pass stimulus.

Dunno what Mitch is thinking with the line he is taking, but I expect he knows what he’s doing with the Senate. It might get him shot by a Trumpiot? But are the Trumpiots even mad when you say they did an insurrection? I guess some of them think they won the election, but calling them violent revolutionaries may not be taken as an insult.

Dems going after Trump would drive turnout for Republicans MASSIVELY.
Plus they didn’t have fox news/right wing media to spin it, thus Nixons approval TANKED. Pretty sure the approval in his own party was only like 25-30%. If Trump tanked to that, they vote to convict too.
Forcing Nixon out when 70% of the party doesn’t approve of him anymore was the political play, it wasn’t integrity. But if they had right wing media like they have now it wouldn’t have happened
This whole witness thing is a non-issue imo. The mess up was whatever led Raskin to request witnesses in the first place and then call no witnesses. But even then, not that big of a deal, because it didn’t make any difference to the outcome and no one will remember this in a few weeks.

This. God himself could have come down from his magical space cloud to decree trump was guilty and not a single Republican changes their vote. Every second longer this went on was massively -EV.
