Yeah the optimism is most people are not on this side. Yes it’s depressing that 40+ % of the country are deplorable shits but at least it’s not 50+ and won’t be.
I’m on the fence. I’d like to stay and fight, but don’t see any organized plans to do so. I don’t even know who’s on my team. Who do we get behind? Schumer? Please. I’d feel better with Pelosi as majority leader. I don’t like her, but at least she can be ruthless and knows how to wield power. I’m not as confident about Schumer.
Both you and your father (and honestly, a lot of people here) need to follow this woman on Twitter.

She is adamant that democracy is ALWAYS under attack and has always been under attack. You have to fight for democracy because by nature people will always try to gain power and control. Sitting back and expecting good to prevail never works.
The Deese mission is to figure out what a “60-vote package” looks like.
Followed. Thanks!
Biden has been a senator for 36 years and knows how the game is played. Not sure if that’s a good or bad thing. I’ll say that I’ve been shockingly impressed with his first week in office tho
At times it fills me with rage that so many can have such retrograde views on racism, or be misled by propaganda into false beliefs. I’d be more worried if those things didn’t give me an emotional reaction.
Those that want to divide us will never stop attempting to do so. I do my best to focus my anger at the perpetrators of lies, rather than those who have fallen for those lies.
Being there 36 years is a large part of the problem. A lot of those GOP Senators are former colleagues. Sure, they ate other people’s faces in the past, but it’s only in the very recent past that he’s discovering they’re willing to eat his too.
But the 40% have the power. They also have most of the guns
The question for me is, can we get rid of citizens united. Can we get rid of the elector college. It’s sick that even tho Biden won the popular vote by 11M, we were like (48k? or 480k?) away from losing the presidency yet again. Also, 48M more people voted for a Democrat senator, yet it’s 50/50. With all the gerrymandering, voter suppression, etc., Democrats have to crush just to win any election. Creating a level playing field needs to be way up on the list of priorities before 2022
This country is not and has never been great at anything other than marketing itself as being great.
They are also going to die sooner.
I agree the future isn’t so bright we gotta wear shades but this country is acting like many other states that have transitioned from dinosaur institutions into more enlightened places. For most who lived thru transitions it sucks but it generally works out in the long run. Anyway I’m just being optimistic, which is rare for me so take it when you can.
At the risk of sounding condescending, how could you want to live among so many positively stupid and gullible people? It’s downright depressing. Not sure if it’s any different in other countries tho
Your overall point is fine, but just wanted to correct that Biden won the popular vote by about 7 million and idk about this 48 million Senate number. In any case, the Senate “popular vote” is not very relevant, since not all seats are up each cycle. But yes, it is certainly true that the deck is stacked for Republicans.
This recurring thing where people talk about leaving (lol) because it’s the end of the USofA is like saying you’re going to leave the Roman Empire because of how disastrous the political situation was during and after Commodus’ reign. I mean sure, there’s probably a decent chance that you’ve identified an inflection point, but you’re likely missing the time frame and geographic scale by a pretty wide margin.
I never said it was, but it seems particularly bad now. My dad is 56 and said when Bush won his 2nd term he felt the country was in really bad shape, but never thought the situation was hopeless. Now he feels it’s truly hopeless
Will do! Appreciate the comments from all. I’m just really depressed right now. Thanks
Oh yeah, I can see how you read it that way, but I didn’t intend to imply you said this is or was a great place.
AOC is gonna be a witness at the trial right? I hope she specifically calls out Cruz and Hawley under oath and demands they be thrown out of Congress.
Your question doesn’t sound condescending. I always feel you are earnest and forthright. I live in the USA, just like you. It can be depressing to think about if we dwell in that mental space for too long. I’m not saying we should stick our heads in the sand and ignore reality. The challenges that we perceive can seem insurmountable, and they would most likely be so if we had to take action alone. We, you and I, our families, our communities…we are not alone. Hearing about good news reminds us of that. More importantly, taking action in our own lives, however small, confirms to us that to we can act in concert with others, build solidarity, and achieve change.
Shit I’m 56. Now I am depressed.
