Remember when Trump stayed on script for his first answer and people were all like, “Man, he’s doing great.”
Yeah I think we are all numb to his complete insanity but normal people don’t realize how bad it is (or didn’t before that shit show).
IDK the next debate is a town hall with voters asking questions, it might be good to not limit Dumb Donnie’s ability to self own.
Then skip the last one.
I think this is a really important dynamic. As ridiculous as it is for the Trumpers to complain about Chris Wallace being in the tank for Biden, won’t Trump look even worse if he interrupts and is dismissive towards “real voters” who seem to be speaking about their personal comcerns?
He’ll just let them finish and then say “well thats all the Democrats fault and the antifas and the radical leftists”.
That was not a debate, that was an ambush!
Man, I think this debate format worked outstandingly well for Biden, the Dems would be crazy to want to change it.
It was apparently a Twitter poll, so ok. That bias definitely exists though and would show up in a real poll, just as it did in the initial reactions of many posters itt. I reacted that way myself. I saw Biden as weak and losing. I’m happy many people saw it differently, especially women.
Trump knows he’s losing. He was focussed. Fuck the rules, he was nasty and vicious. Biden was facing a cornered, wounded animal. Biden was inexcusably not ready for that. Too often looked weak. Some people won’t look past that. A Trump-supporting friend who definitely should have known better once told me “at least he’s not a pussy.”
Even Gordon Ramsay realized the absurd bully routine can’t last forever. His audience expected him to mature, and his brand persona has evolved accordingly. Trump is the exact same asshole politician he was four years ago.
I believe he was meditating. He made a concerted effort to keep his cool and let Trump dig his own grave. It was vital that Biden cut him down without escalation. If he escalates, we’re now watching a schoolyard fight where Trump’s tactics are just how you win a brawl.
But because Biden didn’t escalate, Trump came off as a tired bully. Think of the people who had all the power in high school as bullies and now are bald, fat, thrice divorced, etc etc.
When you’re an adult and you run into that asshole, it’s amazing to see him flail while you wonder how you ever let him have an ounce of power over you. That’s what people saw last night. Biden isn’t some scared child who gave up and is now quietly taking a beating. Hes so far above Trump’s cheap shots that he laughs over and over and over.
Last night, Biden freed all of us to laugh at Trump instead of fear him. And Trump of course responded by calling on the Proud Boys to stand by. He feels threatened, and he should, so he sent out the SOS to some of the only staunch allies he has left.
Biden made a few unforced errors there.
-
He practically endorsed her candidacy.
-
He said his position is that the people should get to decide, which obviously wasn’t his position in 2016 - he didn’t even mention why.
-
He didn’t hammer them on the hypocrisy.
He could have skipped all of that and pivoted to healthcare, but once he did #2 he had to explain why and address the hypocrisy.
I think the calculated strategy is for Biden to keep his cool during debate one to let Trump do what happened last night. Biden told him dude, just be an adult. But we could all see Biden was restraining himself. He had a fury begging to be unleashed.
The second debate is a Town Hall, and we already saw that the audience is ready to eviscerate Trump in a former Town Hall.
So in the third debate, with Trump continuing to escalate, people will be begging for Biden to SON the hell out of him. That will be time for the hammer, assuming it’s not a Simpsons stop, he’s already dead situation for Trump.
he didn’t endorse her, but yeah that part came off poorly. There’s a few lines he has to straddle like that (not being full attacking like kav hearings or full blown anti fracking because of pennsylvania) and none of them he pulled off last night.
I’d have skipped hammering them on the hypocrisy–probably doesn’t matter or you literally could do that the entire night.
yes, he could’ve simply replied with four years ago you all said to let the voters decide so I think we should let the voters decide now.
There’s just so much shit thrown you can’t clean it all up in one go, have to let some things go (like the forest nonsense, you can’t get technical cause nobody understands so maybe something like “I’m sure the forest ranger disagrees with everything you just said”).
There was a lot of stuff like that where you want to chime in but have to quickly think of a response in only one line or it’s a net negative to engage. Some people aren’t quick witted unstuckers in the world.
I understand that he didn’t literally endorse her, but it sounded a lot like it. Especially to average folks who aren’t wonky political nerds like us.
Right but the SCOTUS thing was obviously coming up. He should have been better prepared.
They need a time penalty of, say 15 seconds off their next 2 minutes every time they interrupt.
8 interruptions and they have their mic cut and can leave alone or listen to their opponent say whatever he wants without reply.
One of the German countries.
A not-shithole country where they do things the white, er, I mean right way.
FWIW I think Hell’s Kitchen still features the asshole version of Gordon
“Bestiality” is exactly right.
Holy Roman Empire?
True true. Well I didn’t say he’s NEVER an asshole lol. But he also hosts a cooking show for kids.
