I haven’t dipped into it yet, and I don’t want to dump on Interstellar for the umpteenth time, but I am beyond bored by the injection of family drama/sentimentality into space exploration movies/shows. You assholes are exploring space and settling new planets; how is that not compelling enough? Yet you constantly pull me back to care about much you miss your kids or the strain it’s putting on your marriage. Best recent movie to avoid that for the most part was The Martian. Although nothing approaches 2001 in that regard; there’s one scene with Haywood zooming with his daughter and that’s the last of it. I’m not heartless, but it’s too much, even in a show like The Expanse.
One notable exception to this though, because it was sort of more existentialist in nature, I liked Sunshine and it was schmaltzy at times.
Yeah, there’s a lot of Hillary Swank dealing with family drama back on Earth. The bigger problem is that this is the most telegraphed show I’ve ever seen outside of a CW superhero shows. Wow, the Russian guy doesn’t trust Hillary Swank but then they have to go on a dangerous spacewalk together. I wonder if there will be a bonding experience! I’ll give it two more eps before I quit because I’m thirsty for a good sci-fi show.
(Just mute the Pink Floyd here or don’t, I can’t find a clean clip)
I mean get fucked all space movies since 1968, you’ve had over 50 years to approach this genius and I can’t think of anything that even comes half way. Maybe parts of Lynch’s Dune with the desert porn and Toto Brian Eno Prophecy theme.
No I really liked the seasons with the Earth/Mars/Belters war. Just the abrupt change to the new setting I wasn’t really feeling and just kind of put it off and never picked it back up.
That book was fairly standalone and I recall them getting back to the main plot after that. Seems like 3 episodes of the new season are out, Amazon must have not promoted it at all because I didn’t know it was out either and I would think that their algos would point it out to me since I watched last season.
I think this season goes in that direction. Won’t say anything else but I also felt the slog at the same time as you but made it through and now fairly excited for the next one
well I’ve got about ten days off starting Friday, no place to go, and a half gallon of scotch to drink, maybe I’ll give it a shot. Hell, I’ll rewatch the whole thing.
Really enjoying The Expanse season 5. Have not read the books.
I enjoy more near future space with challenges of limited technology and “solar”politics with a minimum of “magic”. So yeah there’s is Miller/protomolecule shit, the earth/mars/belter dynamic is awesome.
(Two great examples of “magic” are Contact on the beach and that stupid Interstellar library).
Y’all have convinced me to use the holiday to check this out. Let us form an Expanse thread! Would love for you to be able to discuss it without worrying about spoilers.
