The Crypto Thread

ive bought on coinbase and then shipped it to some offshore gambling site right away dozens of times, its definitely possible. there is a limit i think its either $500 or $1k and anything over that amount you have to wait.

I haven’t listened to this yet, but this should be an interesting thing to discuss…

They’ve been garbage on everything for like two years.

The narrow focus on Beanie Babies is odd given that tons of collectibles have skyrocketed in recent years. They are junk wax cards except for even dumber people. McDonald’s alone produced a staggering 100,000,000 of them which completely sold out in two weeks. Very predictably worthless given production volume (shout out to NBA Top Shot).

It really isn’t unless you think CaSiNoS pReYiNg On ThE pOoR is an interesting discussion (it’s not).

Specifically ACH?

It’s more like adding more NFTs to the market is an indicator that there is demand for NFTs. Some of the “retro” video games that are valuable now aren’t that old and most likely were not destroyed to any great extent, and yet new video games seem just about as popular as ever. Same with sports cards and T206 Honus Wagners fetching record prices.

The concept of vice investments “preying” on the poor is a real mindbender. Like, imagine some poor schmuck in 2010 thinking about plunking down $100 on Bitcoin after paying away most of his after-tax McJob wages to exorbitant rent and other bullshit. But then some savvy investment cop swoops in to inform him that akshually it would be much wiser to put that $100 into a Roth IRA. You gotta love seeing white privilege inheritance class giving investment (or really any) advice to the poor, like when they say, “Why would a person sell drugs? It’s dangerous and you can go to jail!”

I actually own a first edition beanie baby. Grandmother gave it to me before beanie babies were a thing. But yeah being six years old at the time…original tag is lost…and had to sew up the moose after he took some abuse

How do you know if they’re first edition? My younger brother probably has about 80 of them and I think most have tag protectors and are in good shape.

lol, I had seen this before but I’d forgotten about it. Not one of his better takes.

You can replace it with other collectibles, if you like. Do baseball cards steadily appreciate in value? It’s not obvious why a 1930’s comic book will be worth more in real terms five years from now.

I think the basic point is that collectibles follow their own weird nonsensical “logic”, and that what looks valuable to one person looks like junk to another, that this has always been true and that there are still plenty of collectibles that are valuable to counter examples of those which have fallen into obscurity.

I would heavily bet on BAYC being valuable a year from now, I am somewhat confident they will still be valuable in 5 years, beyond that who knows.

My kid is getting into baseball and in going over my collection, it depressed me that all of my Griffey Jr rookie cards are basically worth less than they were in the 90s. I saved up for an 85 McGwire like a sucker.

However I still have a bunch of dual lands from Magic the Gathering so I’m apparently rich as fuck. Kid was very impressed with that. All my buddies who had Moxes and Library of Alexandria sold in the mid 2000s. Suckers.

Shahrazad which is basically a trolling card is worth like $500 bucks. Best investment I ever made.

Ive got a Gem mint Bonds Topps Tiffany rookie somewhere. Worth about what I paid for it in 2005

Which Griffey rookies do you have? I’m assuming yours aren’t graded, but high grade ones are still higher than they ever were pre-pandemic.

I’ve never graded any. I’ve got a couple Upper Deck, one Fleer and then at least a couple Donruss. I doubt any of them are good enough to make up the cost of the grading, but maybe. I know one UD card isn’t perfectly centered for sure. I was smart enough as a kid to always put them in plastic so they’re at least in decent shape edge-wise. I’ll take a look and see if any are worth the effort.

I wonder what the McGwire was worth during the summer/fall of '98. Edit - this 1998 news article says $150-175 for ungraded.

The whole thing about grading baseball cards is interesting. It’s a way of creating even more scarcity as you effectively toss out all the ungraded cards.

Dude just watch a few episodes of Pawn Stars and you’ll understand how collectibles work.

Predictions on whether California calling for beginning to use crypto in government spaces and pushing for regulation is going to lead to a bump or slide?

I get big antiques roadshow vibes with some NFTs
