The Crypto Thread

What if I offered you access to a private discord where you could hang out with those nerd techbros all day? Is that something you’d be interested in?

Or, maybe they are going to do this but why the hell do they need a non fuckable token to do this? Your kid buys the skin without an NFT! I mean I don’t care or anything and it’s great that apparently some people are making money on this stuff but I just don’t get it.

we’re in the metaverse having this conversation right now. VR and stuff, idk. but the shared internet space is the metaverse. this site is in the metaverse. but it’s not web3 so instead of all of us getting paid it’s making everyone miserable and/or crazy

Do you think there were Dutch people sitting around having these same conversations about the tulip bros?

no. but in web3 you could build a keed brand and make a nonfuckable token worth more than it otherwise would, because you’ve added some culture and history to it

but…no one wants a keeed brand

I mean, it’s even sillier. They’re trying to not only say that adults will do this, but then that the Spiderman skin will be worth $100 in a few years time, more than the game itself cost.

Which is to say, OK maybe famous actress Reese Witherspoon needs to plan for this. But shitposter Senor Keed does not.

don’t sell yourself short. see, this is what web2 does, it tears people down. REESE WITHERSPOON gets it. REESE WITHERSPOON wants you to achieve your dreams. and you’re just sitting there making jokes

It’s all basically a high-stakes casino game that it’s possible to win at if you play well or are lucky. People like novel forms of gambling, especially if they can pretend that they are +EV. The rest of it is 99% just a shell. Shouldn’t be that hard for a forum of ex/poker players to get.

somewhat related headline I saw today, Zynga was purchased for a pretty penny

No I totally get that and wish everyone speculating in this the best. What I don’t get is people who seem to really believe this is going to be a thing going forward. I never had any interest in cryptocurrency but I understood the argument that it like could replace gold or whatever. I don’t even understand what NFTs are for. Again, I could be totally wrong and accept that as I don’t know anything about the subject except for just superficial stuff.

It’s gambling. That’s 90% of the allure.

NFTs are really just a ledger/proof of ownership of digital assets. Some form of that is almost certainly here to stay. Riverman’s example of video game skins is actually a great example of where NFTs would be beneficial to gamers, his kid and himself. Which would you rather have for $5:

-A skin 100,000 other people have (ie completely worthless) or;
-A procedurally generated skin that only you have that someone else might (but maybe not) want at some point. If this happens you transfer proof of ownership (ie the NFT) over to the other player and they send you money.

They were probably endlessly lecturing the people who were getting rich at the dawn of capitalism doing things that had nothing to do with tulips.

But the video game company could implement that unique tradeable system without NFTs, right?

It’s no different from someone blowing it on casino games or poker, but I still find it more depressing when people blow thousands on candy crush or Farmville.
