Today we can be thankful above all else that the guardrails of our political system have held fast against the unprecedented pressures of the Trump administration.
2020 has been a challenging year, but the worst is over. The republic has survived and Joe Biden is already making things better and giving the American people the hope and healing they so desperately need.
There will be no Civil War. There will be no re-education camps for dissidents. There will be none of the imaged horrors of a second Trump term. The Electoral College will vote next month and Trumpism will wither and die. The institutions—that many of you spent recent years belittling and scoffing at—rose to the challenge and saved us all. The press, dedicated civil servants, the federal judiciary, even the Democratic leadership, all deserve credit for stepping up and doing their jobs with calm competence and grace. The American experiment is intact, and even better prepared for any future assault.
So enjoy your Turkey, enjoy your family Zoom calls, enjoy a break from work. We’ve earned it. The future is looking bright.
