During my very brief career as a bureaucrat in the federal government they definitely told me that you can theoretically get fired and maybe even prosecuted for emailing political jokes from your government email account or for using the government printer to print out political flyers. Just wild how they drill scrupulous respect for norms into paper-pushing bureaucrats while the people at the top are free to use the Rose Garden as a backdrop for political ads.

I’m guessing some of the extremely savvy politics watchers out there have noticed that politicians like AOC and Elizabeth Warren and Trump actually have two separate twitter accounts. There’s @AOC where you get their spicy takes and also @RepAOC where you get more down-to-Earth, mundane info. This is precisely because there is a federal law called the Hatch Act that prevents them from getting spicy on main.

Yeah I think most members of Congress who use a lot of social media have dual accounts. But I’m not sure how the rules work for Congress, the @POTUS account is deemed to be owned by the government so it’s federal property. I assume AOC owns both of hers, so I think it’s more a matter of norms and messaging.

Edit: I guess actually it depends on how those donations were structured though.
I mean he makes a fair point about how dated and bad the structure of our democracy is, but sri lanka is only a few years out of a 30 year civil war. Political violence on a scale there we simply don’t have. And society there is much more unequal than here. The potential vanguard of the stupid coup is too wealthy and not idle enough to do anything significant imo.
