The beer, wine, and spirits thread

I am with you on the hazy IPAs. I try one every once in a while, and they are ok at best. Some of them (even highly regarded ones) are borderline gross to me. I also can’t handle any hint of green onion. So I also stick with west coast IPAs when I want hops. I liked Anti-Hero. I’ve always liked Two Hearted. Also Alpha King is very solid.

Is it the disgusting yeast flavor and lack of bitterness?

Im reading this thread while drinking a neipa. Haters everywhere

Y’all missing not getting your hands on a bottle of Armenian cognac (most notably Ararat). It’s quite cheap if bought in Armenia (about $15 for 0.5L bottle). Bottles found online outside of it are close to double the price at least.

If you’re wondering how it can call itself cognac despite not being made in that region, it won a cognac Grand Prix in 1900 in France against actual cognacs. It’s reward was being given the right to call its product cognac.

Imagine if Papua New Guinea made its own whiskey and entered it into a competition in the US only to crush all American whiskies. Yeah that’s what an Armenian brandy dominating the French is like.

I have a lot of experience with 3 Fonteinen! I think their geuzes are great, especially their golden blend and platinum blend, which incorporate older lambics into the blends. Their fruited varieties have been more hit or miss for me–they seem to have gotten especially sour/acidic recently. I’d guess that you’ll see 750ml bottles of the regular geuze for about $20, and I’d absolutely recommend giving one a try. The golden blends, platinum blends, vintage, and fruited stuff will probably run more and that’s more of a judgment call, but probably still worth trying at least once if you’re willing to buy fruited Tilquin (a blender I also love).

You and me, we are simpatico. Love Two Hearted and Alpha King.

We are always on the lookout for cognac/Armagnac bargains. How available is this stuff in the states? A quick google search shows that some Total Wines might have it

Going back to New England this week and hitting up all of my favorites.

Checking an empty suitcase on the way out, just to fill it with cans to bring home. Wife is not impressed. Also suspect my forum-mates will mostly not be impressed as I share pictures of hazy NEIPAs this week and next.

Citra is the hops mainly used in West coast IPAs right? I hate citra hops with a passion. Generally I prefer malt forward beers like porters, stouts, altbiers, etc.

I do like some well balanced IPAs or black IPAs too. Hazy ones I think are generally better than not hazy ones as long as they aren’t poorly balanced or contain citra hops.

I think historically the big ones were Cascade and Centennial.

I have no idea since I don’t live there.

In the Czech Republic, you’d either have to go to a speciality shop of some kind to get it or order online. Just looking up the websites of B&M wine shops isn’t showing any Armenian cognac.

Citra hops are a fairly recent thing i believe. The ones spider mentioned are probably more traditional West Coast IPA hops, maybe Chinook and Amarillo too.

I just don’t think my beer should taste like pineapple or passionfruit.

man i specifically look for citra heavy beers. it’s how i got into ipa’s to begin with

Jealous. I hit Bissell and Treehouse as well as grabbing a couple brews from Trillium while I was there. I’ll be chasing that high forever, probably.

Bought some of this on vacation too

To be fair, mine wasn’t homemade. So it does look slightly different.

But for something that’s 40% alcohol it goes down very smoothly. It’s why Georgians claim that you cannot get hungover off of good chacha. I suspect mine is a different colour due to it aging in a barrel rather than the homemade stuff seen in the video (which is probably closer to 80% alcohol).

You and I have similar tastes when it comes to beer. Some of my favorite beers are single hopped citras. I’m also a big fan of mosaic and riwaka.

To whoever said beer shouldn’t taste like fruit, the fruited sour I just drank with mango, apricot, and orange notes says no.

But to be fair, a crisp pilsner or Helles in a hot summer day is delicious. And a proper west coast IPA is a thing of beauty.

I enjoy a fruited sour or a wheat beer with citrus.

But I draw the line at berry flavored beers.

Going to this brewery tomorrow. What would you pick?

Starting with the Triple Hope, because I’m an IPA slut.

Then maybe go for the saison?

If it’s a place I know nothing about, I like to get a flight and mix it up.

I’d get 3/4/15/16.
