A friend sent me a bottle of Macallan 12 as a gift for the new baby. Is it complete blasphemy to use it in cocktails? Any suggestions to ones that will fit its flavor profile (which I’m not sure what it is)?
I’ll start off neat with some ice but I want some options
Usually you would just drink a single malt neat or in ice. Most scotch cocktails use blended scotch. If you still want to use it anyway (it’s your bottle so who gives a shit) you could make a delicious penicillin.
I wouldn’t mix it unless you’ve got a cocktail specifically calling for Macallan 12, or at least a sherry-aged single malt from Speyside or Highland (I forget which, Macallan used to be one but then got reclassified as the other). Use blends for your cocktails otherwise.
Macallan 12 used to be one of my favorites, but either they changed the recipe some years ago when they started expanding or the batches that came out about five years ago weren’t as good. Maybe it is again, I’m not really sure.
Funny anecdote-- back in my old life of covering booze I met Dave Broom, who wrote this book, which offers ideas for simple highballs that work well with different whiskeys, in an attempt to democratize the spirit. (Some of the master distillers I met in this time were kinda snarky about that, for the record, lol.) I made a spreadsheet years ago chronicling the very best suggestions.
I went looking for Macallan 12 on it, but no luck. If you’re insistent on mixing, though, I’ve had good results with this list. 2 parts mixer, 1 part spirit in all of these (In particular, the Nikka Coffey Grain + coconut water sounds like sacrilege, but it’s quite good.)
Speaking of cocktails, it’s more of a summer drink (although I’ll still have them), but I’ve been really enjoying a ranch water from time to time. (The canned stuff is fine, but the authentic stuff is the best.)
My recipe is:
-tall glass full of ice (I usually just use a pint glass)
-2 oz blanco tequila
-juice of 1/2 lime (or 1 tbsp if you don’t have fresh limes)
-top with Topo Chico (one of those 5.5-oz bottles should be about perfect)
