The beer, wine, and spirits thread

The only cocktail that we drink regularly is a simple gin and tonic, and the quality of the gin (and the tonic, actually) makes a difference.

lol I usually just skim this thread for liquor recommendations but wanted to +1 this for anyone who hasn’t tried them. I’ve come to really like seltzers. They’re pretty refreshing especially when you’re outside on a hot day. ‘Truly’ is another brand that has some good flavors–their lemonade ones are delicious (though you can only drink like 1 or 2 before you feel your teeth rotting away from acidity) and the recently-released tea variants are tasty as well. Protip: give them a light shake before opening to get rid of some of the carbonation–otherwise I get bloaty when I’ve had a few.

Anyways, back to our regularly scheduled program.

Did the US have an ‘Alcopop’ phase in the mid to late 90s? They were everywhere in the UK then, much moral panic from the elders and drunken youthful hi jinks. I was never a fan, but I downed the odd Hooch or blue WKD just to try and fit in.

Yes. It was called Zima. In the mid to late 90’s.

I bought a pack of this when they released it 4 or 5 years back and didn’t mind it but I’ll also drink just about anything

Same here on drinking anything. I like just about anything with booze in it.

When Zimas were hot back in the 90s, they were plain flavor, so we’d put jolly rancher candies in them to create flavors.

Have you ever had Malort?

Had to google that. Never tried it. Sounds kinda foul. Have you had it?

My malort initiation was my friends telling me I had to try this awesome new shot. They got me pretty good.

Yes. And I smiled while drinking it.

I like that idea, we would do that with Sprite when I was a teen. I later learned rappers were doing the same thing and adding cough syrup to the mixture.

That’s called lean or purple drank. Although you probably know that. I’ve made some with left over codeine cough syrup a few times. It’s pretty good.

Question time: You are stranded on a deserted island… what is the beer you have unlimited of?

I’m going with Weihenstephener Hefe, aka, the GOAT beer.

Haven’t tried that specific one, and don’t normally drink Hefe’s in general. What’s the major selling point on it?

For my desert island I’d go with a Pure Project hazy/murky IPA. This may be local bias, but I’ve just never been dissatisfied with their brews.

Pure Project is awesome. To me the Weihenstephaner Hefe is the perfect mix of drinkability, flavor, and quenchability. It’s the benchmark of the style and one of the old breweries in the world. I hate the pretentious of the next sentence but it’s true. Don’t drink it out of a bottle; find a place that has it on tap and go there. I think I would get tired of even elite hazies, but I will never get tired of this beer.

This is the best beer I’ve had in months. Super fresh, really bitter, nice pronounced dry hop flavor. Was getting sooo tired of hazy DIPAs that tasted like juice. West coast IPAs 4 lyfe, yo.

North Park is San Diego right? I spent 2 nights in that neighborhood and went there. Incredible stuff.

I’ve been meaning to do a drive down University/El Cajon Blvd from LaMesa to Mission Hills and stop in at a handful of breweries. I’ll add this to the list.

Yup that’s San Diego. Great area to try tons of craft breweries in walking distance to each other.

My favorite breweries in SD mostly based on how likely I’d be to order one at a tap room but also good places I’ve been are Bagby, Burgeon, Harland, Mikkeller, Modern Times, Nickel, North Park, Pizza Port, Resident, Societe, and White Labs.

They delivery straight from the brewery every weekend! I’m the worst at going to north park now that I’m older I would get so psyched to try new places on my days off that I go at 11:30AM and its like the places are barely opened and I just sit there alone listening to the employees complain with each other.
