Climate of your island is quite relevant to the answer, but for a hot tropical place that everyone thinks of first, yours is the right answer. Weihenstephaner is absolutely perfect at what it sets out to do, and it’s great on a hot day. Might well be the best beer under 6% ABV in any category.
Hazy Viking. Dry hopped with citra and “vic secret”. IDK what vic secret is. @Mr_Unstoppable do you? Also, this is from Wild Barrel up in San Marcos. They’ve got 15 sours on tap. Have you been there?
Vic’s secret is originally an Australian hop, which usually means that it has a more unusual or stronger citrus flavor than your typical ipa hop. I’ve heard that the different soil composition and native pests are what gives Southern Hemisphere hops it’s unique character but I’m not exactly sure. It is a trademarked hop though so most of it should be grown in Washington.
Wild Barrel is great their core sour line of different Berliner weisses’ are worth a try for me. Sometimes it’s hard to find a good normalish fruit sour that isn’t like… barrel aged, 8% abv super Berliner bs, hoppy, etc. Their IPAs use great hop combinations and they make classic hazies for sure.
Also their founders really know their beers so I would trust anything they put out even though I don’t personally like “dr bill”
Been drinking some great beer lately. This one has really strong aroma and juicy flavor, but maybe is a little too light compared to what I would normally drink.
This to me is one of my favorites when I don’t want a citrus IPA, love the pine and woodsy flavors when this beer is super fresh. It is again a little lighter than what I would normally drink, but it’s apparent bitterness is still pretty high.
The Vic in Vic Secret is for the Australian state of Victoria… so you know, Victoria’s Secret, but that’s trademarked.
Horribly name but also hilarious because you could embarrass people with “Ok who had the Victoria’s Secret IPA?” when they ordered a California Brewing Company Mono Hoptacular IPA with Vic’s Secret like maybe they asked for a single hop IPA or said the name wildly wrong to me when ordering so I’d get to zing them.
Worst hop names list… cashmere, falconer’s flight, fuggle, green bullet, helga, Idaho 7 (someone trademarked this?), loral, Sabro, Waimea
I was just over in the cooking thread talking about cooking my steak in ghee. That’s what your beer looks like. My jar of ghee. That is one cloudy IPA.
Talking about cloudy IPAs, this one from a small local brewery is pretty amazing. Lots of citrus and tropical fruits. Great stuff!
That glass takes me back to middle school biology.
I was thinking more
I dunno I kind of like fuggle because it’s so British.
Doing a northeast brewery road trip with some friends in July. Anyone have thoughts on the preliminary itinerary below? We were initially just doing a night in Boston and 3 in Portland but Google maps adventures gave me a different idea.
Wednesday - fly in to Boston - Treehouse - stay the night.
Thursday - drive to Foley Brothers and then to Burlington and stay the night. Hit Foam while there.
Friday - drive to Alchemist then to Hill Farmstead then to Portland. 5 hour total drive
Spend Friday and Saturday in Portland. Fly out Sunday.
Edit: I worry this might be too much.
If you take VT-116 from Foley Brothers to Burlington (which I’d probably recommend over US-7 anyway), Frost Beer Works is right on the way. It’d be silly not to stop there unless you were really pushed for time.
Depending on how much time you’re in Burlington, I’d highly recommend going up to Four Quarters if you can. (I do realize that it seems like your Thursday is pretty busy)
And if you do this, I’d be happy to meet you at one of the Vermont places, unless it’s the one week in July I’m not around.
Thanks for the tip! Would love to meet up if we decide to go this route. We would be in Burlington on the 22nd.
Unless something weird happens, I should be here.
Re Boston - recommend you don’t miss Trillium and Vitamin Sea.
Vitamin Sea is down a bit by The Cape, so would require some driving logistics if you’ve only got one night here.
Trillium should be an easy win as they’ve got taprooms in Fenway and Seaport. I’d be up to meet for a couple tastes at Trillium if you’re interested.
Are you shipping beer home?
The wives vetoed the Vermont detour due to the car ride. We’re going to stay in Boston for 2 nights instead. Good call on Vitamin Sea I forgot they were near Boston. I’ll definitely hit you up once we have firm plans for a Trillium meet up. Any neighborhood recommendations for an Airbnb or hotel?
Yeah we’re bringing an extra suitcase to check for beer only.
There is a Red Sox Yankees game that Thursday that I would love to go to, but I’m not paying $500 a ticket. Maybe they will increase occupancy before July and release more.
