Brewery is from Sacramento. They have some good stuff

And good recs for a peaty sub $100 single malt? Is lagavulin 16 the gold standard at that price point?

I like Ardbeg Uigeadail. I’ve generally been pleased with anything by Ardbeg or Laphroig.

Thanks. I need something to put on my Xmas list. I’ve already had plenty of Lag 16 so I’ll try the Uigeadail.

laphroig is a peaty scotch that a lot of people like and is quite a bit cheaper than lagavulin. Not a huge fan of that style though, so my opinion isn’t worth too much.

Bowmore Darkest 15 is a good one for a more balanced peaty scotch in that price range. Hard to beat Lag 16, so it at least offers something unique.

Can you find Lagavulin under 100 though? Think that’s 120 at my liquor store, I could be wrong though. I for sure like Lagavulin a lot more than Laphroig.

Started with a few hefe’s from a local spot. Moving on to a bottle of wine we picked to from a tiny winery in rural Michigan.

Curious if anyone here has had a sparkling Shiraz, I mention it because it’s Thanksgiving and one of the roles of sparkling Shiraz here is festive, it’s a common choice at Christmas. Being a chilled wine, it’s more suited to Christmas meals than still red wines when it’s 100F outside, but that said it also goes nicely with rich foods like roast turkey and gravy even if it’s cold out.

If you don’t know what it is, it’s Shiraz (aka Syrah) made into a sparkling wine via methode champenoise. They’re all somewhat sweet, the degree of sweetness varies. It might sound gross, it’s hard to explain if you’ve never had one. They’re not usually cerebral wines like a fine Burgundy or something, but aged examples can actually be pretty great. I have no idea whether they make it to America or not, but if anyone can find some in a shop I can provide some advice. I recommend trying them for something new.

Edit: I know they make it to America in at least some places because I remember back in the blogosphere era around the time of the Iraq War some right wing psycho (Jonah Goldberg? John Podhoretz?) saying that there was no finer wine to drink with pepperoni pizza. Which is true but also struck me as something a fat and boorish American would say.

Looks like at least a few examples make it over here. I’ve never tried one myself, but I’ll put it on the list to give one a try, although we typically prefer our sparklers on the dry side.

This one is interesting. Probably a little too sweet for me, but I got through the bottle over a few hours. I’d recommend splitting this with at least one other person, though.

Edit: the bottle is hard to read. It’s Caramella Ale. Apple, cinnamon, and caramel.

Don’t think I’ve even had the Best’s but I imagine you want that. Black Chook is sweet and simple.

THIS is a variant done right. Oatmeal stout with coffee and maple syrup is a combo that’s been done before, but dare I say, never done this well? The coffee is the star here which is the way it should be. The maple is on the edges and not overpowering at all. 5 stars. Will definitely buy any other bottles of this that I find.

Variant #3 - Kentucky Fog - Earl Grey Tea, Black Tea, and Honey

This one is lost on me. It’s probably not fair for me to say anything about it at all as I know nothing about tea. It seems like for tea and BA stout people it would be a great beer, but I wasn’t a huge fan.

Did you get the Weller or OFBB versions? Really curious about those.

OFBB, but probably not going to open that one for a while unless I can snag another.
