Pretty amazing reading the replies to this Fox News tweet. Right wing deplorables really hold vacation as sacrosanct and nothing to be done about it.
I don’t even comprehend the idea of not skipping, altering vacation plans for a massive work emergency that Texas’ own Governor calls a once in 120 years catastrophe. Cruz may have made his vacation plans “months ago!”

Seriously just browse through the first handful of responses. Everyone of them is “so what”, “nothing he could do”, “HE HAD A VACATION!!!”.
One of the reasons congress gets away with so much is that people put zero expectations on their representatives.
I keep trying to find an angle where in a private business environment and analogous crisis with responsibility came up, how would I not be firing Ted Cruz. It’s impossible.

Frustratingly this will hurt Cruz with Republicans about 100x less than the French Laundry thing hurt Gavin Newsome with Democrats.
I’d be shocked if they weren’t already spinning it as, “Coastal elites think they can tell OUR senator what to do! Are you going to stand for that? I vacation in Cancun sometimes. Does that make me an evil person?”

I haven’t read one supportive comment to Newsome’s stupid Frech Laundry dinner from Democrats. It’s such asymmetrical playing field when like 75% of Rs just see it as Broncos vs. Chiefs and you never criticize your team unless they lose.
Remember all those “they’re not on vacation next week, it’s just a recess” takes? Lol Senate.
And imagine selling your soul to the devil and not even being able to fly private. At least Al Pacino made it look fun in that movie. What a loser.

San Antonio update:
Wednesday 9:30am-1:30pm: Power on.
Wednesday 1:30-6:30pm: Power off.
Wednesday 6:30pm to present: Power on and appears to be staying. Many friends have lost water, but we have not. Boil warning, not because of any detected contamination, but from “an abundance of caution.”
Thursday morning: Another two inches of snowfall, expected to continue until about 3pm. But nothing’s failing. Yet.
The next hurdles are food shortages (grocery stores haven’t been restocked since Sunday; we’re good with all but fresh fruit) and gas shortages (but I teach from home, not going anywhere anyway).

If Trump taught us anything, it’s that the correct play for right wing politicians is always to double down. He should have said hell yes I’m taking a vacation many people say the greatest vacation in the history of our country blah blah blah.

I stopped following the COVID thread a while ago, but I’m assuming that if Ted Cruz is happy to blame his daughters for wanting a vacation, then that means impulse travel is OFB in the US and it’s all good? Man, congrats guys.
