hot take: Cuban sandwiches always look about 25% better than they taste.
Really? Donāt think Iāve ever had one where the opposite wasnāt true, tasting at least 25% better than it looked. They seem downright humble in appearance compared to, like, an Phlly cheesesteak or a banh mi or a piled high pastrami.
Anyway, confession time. I started the pork a little late, due to fighting with toddlers about picking up their toys, so it got pulled a little early, due to fighting with toddlers who were way too hungry. So, itās finishing in the oven after having first been a delicious dinner of ācut with a knifeā pork rather than pulled pork.
It may just be me. I grew up in South Florida, and I ate many awesome, authentic Cuban sandwiches. In my adulthood, every time I have had one, thatās has been my reaction. There may be a nostalgia factor in there. Perhaps they tasted good to me then, but my tastes have changed. Or maybe the ones I have eaten have not been great. I have hardly been back to Miami in the last 20+ yrs, and when I have, I havenāt had a Cuban sandwich.
If Iām back there, Iāll test out the theory. Until then, Iām skeptical. Iām not saying theyāre bad. But I always come away a bit disappointed.
Fair enough. Perhaps some of it is thinking theyāre amazing when youāre in a small culinary window as a kid, but then never seeing that same magic when your horizons broaden? From my perspective, and I say this as a person whoās only been to Florida a couple times, never having eaten a Cuban while there, theyāve always seemed like a sandwich that underpromises and overdelivers. I contrast this with a cheesesteak, that, like, while great, almost always seems like it should have been better than it actually ended up being.
I love a good Cubano! This picture is from when I was in Miami a couple years ago and it was as awesome as it looks!
Got a nice little sunday planned. Crockpot meatballs are going, nacho dip being prepared soon, picking up the wings around 1pm, and a stuffed pepperoni bread sitting in the fridge waiting to be baked. We may order a pizza later. I donāt know if theyāll be time.
Just my wife and I so weāre keeping it simple. Doing buffalo chicken dip (shout out to spidercrab), some crab cakes weāve had in the freezer for a while, corn bread and a little meat/cheese spread. Considered smoking some ribs but it is so damn cold here that I figured it wasnāt worth the trouble.
Beautiful sunny day in San Diego. Starting off with fresh squeezed grapefruit juice Greyhound.

Just went for a run in sub 20 degree weather, and now Iām preparing to treat my body with utter disregard.
I was going to like the first image but wtf is the second one?
They had chili cheese nachos at work so I got that with onions and jalapenos; also a slice of pizza that was floating around the floor Iām working on. I guess thatāsmy ābig game mealā? Iāve got homemade mapo tofu for dinner.
Its a slider, picture kind of sucks but it has sauteed onion and mozzarella cheese on a Hawaiian roll, with some melted butter on top of the bun and baked in the oven.
The Skyline looked more appetizing.
Spidercrab is not fucking around. When he said he was treating his body with āutter disregardā, he meant it.
Iāll try and post some pics later but we are doing a board with a bunch of cheese/veg/dip/pickles/smoked salmon/prosciutto for 1H. We have 3lbs each of king crab legs and jumbo shrimp for the 2H but i am going to guess we never get there and eat that tomo.

This is my kind of meal. Lol at these people cooking their own food.
