Summer LC thread

That looks like a fucking still shot from Sorry to Bother You, the greatest sci-fi movie in 20 years.

Right up until the end of the 20th century there were still cage hotels in a couple major cities in the US (they still exist in Hong Kong). They offered more privacy and more security than that place at about 1/10th the cost.

Related, this documentary is pretty great and available on Prime:

Our PM is calling our election tomorrow which will be oct 21. Total time 5 weeks. Hey USA. Learn something from us.

Your country is legit more fucked than ours, what are we supposed to learn here?

Don’t go chasing waterfalls.

I’m absolutely for free education but if I had to choose between wiping out medical debt or student debt it would absolutely be medical.

In b4 why not both

Internet went out Friday night for four hours, so I had one of those Cable Guy moments where I opened an actual book to read. The book I opened was a poetry book I got in college,

So I was about 50% through a pretty speedy biography of John Donne, his Catholic upbringing and how he was prevented from obtaining degrees because of the religious statues under Elizabeth I, interesting stuff, then he married Anne More to her father’s great displeasure, yadda yadda yadda

Then the author fills us in on Anne’s fate:

Now I don’t want to be all feministy but jesus christ is there ever a sentence that gives short shrift to a person’s arduous experience, “died worn out after giving birth to the 12th kid in 15 years”. No womb is an island, I guess?

Umm, no. Not even close.

Malta looks promising maybe, anyone know anyone who moved there? What’s the job market like?

Dunno if i want to be a subject of Boris Johnson tho

Are you thinking of moving to Malta? Numerous residents are attracted to the tiny island state every year. These include freelance professionals who can work remotely as well as retirees from Northern Europe, with a good number of them from the UK. The attraction lies in the relatively relaxed way of living, affordable cost of living, as well as the country’s historical links to Britain.

The British expat community in Malta is mostly retirees who got sick of having Indian neighbors. I visited there about a month after Brexit happened and pretty much any conversation involving Brits over my age was about how great Brexit is going to be for the country that they no longer live in.

Shameless.

Stunning? Only if you haven’t been paying attention.

I blame the Democrats for this. Fucking morons. How many fucking times are you going to trust this fucking party before you realize that they will take advantage of every single possible weakness they can find, no matter what, because that’s WHO THEY ARE.

For fuck’s sake, wake the fuck up Democrats.

The racism in Czech Republic is a bit different from what you’ll see in the states. The whole aggressive showing of racism thing appears to be rare here even though the ground is fertile for it. There’s no “Bikers for Zeman” here or much in the way of physically attacking people. But the existence of Tomio Okamura and ‘Freedom and Direct Democracy’ is proof that the thoughts are very much there and more common than people here would acknowledge.

My immediate response is different because of the delivery of it. You’ll have a discussion with somebody, nod along to something he/she said while not thinking much, and 5-10 seconds later you’ll think “Oh shit, that was racist.”

Case in point, I was having a discussion with a landlord while looking through a flat he was renting. I like to get a feel on how relations with other tenants have been to get an idea of what his relationship is like with them if there is one at all. It was a friendly, pleasant conversation. Then, without any provocation, he brought up instances of Muslims renting his place and stating how they always left it looking shitty, smelly, and disorganized after they left the flat for good. As a result, he doesn’t rent to them.

The conversation continued onward and it was too late for me to double back to that. The racism was presented in such a nonchalant, casual fashion that I didn’t pick it up immediately like I would in America since racism is made more obvious. There was nothing malicious or threatening in the statement but responding to that negative experience by discarding an entire group of people when renting flats is the racist thing.

Given that the estimated population of Muslims in the CR is approximately 0.2%, I’m suspecting that the number of Muslim tenants he’s had is a number less than two.

American racism is different in the sense that racists there know who the people they’re racist against. They’re customers at their businesess. They’re their neighbors, teach their children and take care of their grandparents. Racism there is based more heavily in hatred. In the CR, you never run into a Muslim. I’ve seen a handful of black people in the last two weeks and I think I heard one speak some Czech. It’s straight-up ignorance (Muslims, Roma) or historical biases (native Russian speakers).

Not sure if I had a point. It’s just observing life while living in a new place.

They’re the Washington Generals, guys. I can promise your blood pressure will go down when you fully accept it.

Well this is fucking disgusting:
