Stuff: the Things We Acquire and Don't Get Rid Of

If you watch old pricing game shows like Price is Right and Lets Make a Deal, everyone was sooooooo excited every time a piano came up in the 70s and 80s.

I live alone, so if I threw out all of the clothes in my closet I no longer wear the closet would look ridiculously bare.

I’m planning to retire and then move in the next 18 months. I figure I’ll get rid of clothes as I pack.

Thread title reminded me of the worst song I’ve ever heard which is also hilariously on topic:

Heh, yup. MrsWookie is part of some local “Buy Nothing” group online that gives away Stuff to each other. I was in favor of it, because at least at first, we were net givers. We’ve been nothing but takers for a while now though.

Next days off I’m attacking the garage. I already have 3 garbage bags and 3 boxes of stuff to donate. I pretty much have to get rid of 50% of the stuff in the garage, which includes some big items that will need a van to move. It’s all a bit daunting tbh but has to be done.

Good luck. I’m currently doing the same thing. The back of my truck is full of stuff that’s going to the dump. I’m a contractor or was before covid I mostly stay at home with my kid now. I have accumulated random plumbing parts, electrical, fasteners, siding, wood, anything and everything left over from jobs. My thinking was I would use on next job I get and make some money. The thing is I have no clue what I actually have so I would never use any of the stuff for the next job. I would just buy what was needed.

Yep. We gave away like one thing when we moved here and I was like ‘nice, community stuff, good job’. We now have like 7 different sets of chairs and we didn’t have anyone over for two years.

I find it very difficult to get anything out of these groups, because there are so many frequent fliers/alert setters. I managed to score a few moving boxes, while giving away tons of stuff. My new town has a culture of random drawings to counter the FFs somewhat.

I’ve used these, and in Boston, it’s totally worth it to have one. We had five, and were able to sell and give away all of them when we installed central AC. I gave one to a colleague during a heat wave, and he gave me a case of homemade beer, double IPA in 750 ml bottles. Later, I returned the bottles, and he gave me fish for sashimi.

Me too. My garage is full of so much old solar stuff that I was never going to use anyway. You’ve seen me in the Home Improvement thread, but not the programming thread. I’m transitioning to software and just got a 6 month contract. The other day I said to myself, there’s a lot of stuff in here that a software developer has no business having and started filling bins with stuff to recycle.

On recent jobs I have been trying to dig out as much usable stuff as I can, but a lot of these solar parts get obsolete because people change racking equipment lines and a lot of general electrical parts get like rusty and discolored and not matching and I can’t really use them for customers anyway. So, it’s all doubly useless. Lotta aluminum though, so I’ll get some hundreds of dollars of recycling.

Yeah, the only real downside from a Stuff perspective is that if it fails, it requires special disposal and thus could sit around taking up space before you go through that trouble. As long as it’s still functional, you should have little trouble selling it or giving it away should you ever stop wanting it.

Most people vent it through a window that slides up and down.
