What about the possibility of him being a robot? I know bots absolutely crush poker now so maybe this is the first attempt at a live bot.

Phil Ivey’s quote calling low unconnected cards “pieces of cheese” might be my favorite all time poker quote.

The funny part is the NVG guys didn’t even bother to watch 2 minutes into the magic James Bond key fob deck reader thing to realize it needs a specially marked deck with precise micro-markings on the edges of each card. That’s not something you can just pull out a sharpie and replicate.

Half of them thought it was somehow reading RFIDs off a stacked deck from a few feet away and accurately figuring out the top 2 cards. The other thought it was a magic x-ray camera or something.

Also I don’t get why Postle would need to be in constant contact with the other conspirator throughout the hand. Just hearing or seeing the hole cards one time is all it takes.

Not sure if serious.

Zero chance it just a bot in the traditional sense. How would the bot be getting information on position, game flow etc. Second no bot crushes any game at 700bb/hour.

As I showed earlier that is so many standard deviations from the norm is something like a 1 in the number of atoms in the universe it’s simply an outlier.

The Cheating Scandal Rocking the Poker World - The Ringer

The Ringer published an article on it.

Yeah that’s basically what I’m talking about. Poker community is gonna pat itself on the back for “solving” the case but how often does that result in money being returned and cheating scumbags going to prison? I’m not trying to trash them too hard, but as soon as it was clear the win rates were impossible with perfect river play and he’s folding the second nuts, the work as a community is done. The rest of the effort should be calling the cops. Instead, they are gonna pitch endless bunk theories about lasers and nanotech devices that can never be confirmed by watching grainy videos.

They probably spent a lot of the money and I don’t know if anyone’s ever gone to jail over cheating others at poker. We’ll be lucky if we figure out exactly what was used in this manner (seems likely they used multiple methods over time) and hopefully it’s simple to stop–maybe we have to go back to the old days of cameras at the felt rather than rfid.

Word. Honestly I am still weirded out by the fact I leave a new iphone payment worth of cash on the table when I get up to pee, counting on the vigilance of a room full of people trying to get my money to somehow protect it for me

As I have a cold tonight :face_with_thermometer: I went down the rabbit hole…

I enjoyed this takedown of the scandal.

Or you can both call the cops and continue to parse through all the footage. The win rates and folding the second nuts is probably not enough on its own to get a conviction in court. If there is any smoking gun that can be seen in any of the videos then it is worth going back and trying to find it.

postle did interview with matusow. Trump would love the guy. Postle too.

Or 4x3, take your pick of 2nd grade math lol he’s like a “professional” carpenter who can’t use a drill.

Maybe it’s all part of an act to get invited to big games…

Not only that - if we (as a community) keep using RFID, it’ll happen again. Probably already has. There will be people using interceptors to do it on their own, inside jobs with manufacturers, inside jobs with the broadcast production crew, people intercepting the broadcast if it’s live to tape and then delayed instead of live commentary over delayed tape, and who knows what else. At least in tourneys the live streams are usually 6-9 out of 1,000+ people, so it’s much harder to organize a scheme. The cash streams are just asking for it, and given how dumb he was to make it obvious, God only knows how many others are doing similar stuff and getting away with it by stacking off to coolers, not being too outrageous in their ranges and not making the signalling easy to pick up.

A smart crew could make 100-150bb/hr for a long time without getting caught, and they could do so in a way that might even be statistically hard to prove given hand histories. They could make it logically very hard to prove given hand histories.

Like imagine if this guy at Stones bluffed off 150bb into the nuts on the river once or twice, stacked off the third nuts against the nuts, and incorrectly hero folded a time or two. He’d still be making an absurd winrate with “proof” he “clearly” wasn’t cheating.

So yeah, we should ditch RFID and go back to hole card cameras and limit live streams to live broadcasts over delayed tape that nobody has access to until 15+ mins have passed.

But I would imagine nothing will change.

Also, I have seen people cheat in primitive ways 3-5 times in my life, and in effective ways a couple times. I “caught” a guy cheating at the WSOP - air quotes because I couldn’t prove it but I put enough heat on him to get him to stop, and the suspicious behavior and play stopped. In low stakes cash I’ve also caught people and had them kicked out who were so bad at poker and stupid about cheating that it was probably -EV to make them stop and kick them out.

I’ve also heard stories of cheating in live poker ranging from low to high tech, and been amazed at the naivete of people who I’ve known who were very good poker players but who didn’t realize they’d been cheated even after the fact.

why are hole card cameras any more inherently secure than rfid? if the guy in the production room is in on it he is going to be able to see the cards either way.

i liked the idea about not putting the cards over the scanner until after the hand is folded. this way the worst case scenario is someone sees the discarded cards which is still a big edge but not 250bb/100 big.

Everything can be hard wired which means you can’t intercept it with some sort of receiver that hacks the encryption, and you could run either one on a delay where nobody in production can see it for 15 minutes. The combination of those two should make it secure.
