Star Wars - The Rise of Skywalker

Yeah, just from that few sentence write up that sounds way more interesting than anything in the new trilogy.

There is some truth to the notion that these movies are just fan service, but I reject the notion that thatā€™s WHY they are bad. A good star wars movie is supposed to be comprehensible and entertaining to a 10 year old. So there canā€™t be that big of a gap between fan service and doing your job properly.

The appropriate time for ā€œfan serviceā€ was the first movie back. And I was into it. But they were wedging awkward moments into the last five minutes of the final movie which is no bueno.

Finally saw it yesterday. After ruminating on it for a day my thoughts are thus:

it wasnā€™t terrible. It was formulaic. I wish Abrams and Disney would have taken the risk that I would love to see. Leave Rey dead. Yup, I said it. Adam Driver is such a good actor, I could see a wrap up movie or even a tv series on Disney+ with him seeking redemption from the rest of the galaxy. Make it a personal, in-depth story that shows off his chops. Obviously he couldnā€™t just walk up to the rebel camp and say, ā€œhi honey, Iā€™m home,ā€ he would need to prove himself. I would watch the shit out of that.

Also, I would watch the shit out of Finn and Poeā€™s Big Gay Adventures. #StormPilot4Lyfe

Ya, Adam Driver is finally free of this terrible series of movies/storyline though. I wouldnā€™t ever wish for having his entire career be wasted on this terrible shit on him. And Iā€™m sure if he is honest deep down he knows doing these movies was a mistake that likely hurt his career.

Obviously I donā€™t watch a lot of movies and maybe that was a dumb take. My ultimate point is that why would Adam Driver want to continue to attach his name to something like SW given both the reality of the franchise and the deservedly harsh critical reception of 8 and 9. Maybe Trolly is right and he only cares about money but if it were me and I was a talented actor I wouldnā€™t dare continue to attach my name to this franchise.

This experience did exactly zero damage to his career. The main thing I have heard about his acting in the series is that his performance was far and away the best part of the series. Everyone knows heā€™s amazing and now heā€™s orders of magnitude more famous. I hope he finds a way to bounce back!

Yeah, I think Adam cares about acting, but itā€™s clear heā€™s making a ton of money and no one thinks any less of him for being in a Star War.

I havenā€™t even seen anyone in the prequels get upset about being in them. Their cast was great but all their acting performances were worse than Driver.
Ewan McGregor is even reprising his role as Obi Wan.
I think you have literally a handful of actors who donā€™t want the star wars/superhero type movies. The A list types that havenā€™t done one already have probably said no to the opportunity.

I was going to offer Jake Lloyd and Ahmed Best as huge counters, but I hear Jake might be doing better these days, and Ahmed certainly is. He and Ahmed Best were bullied relentlessly after Phantom Menace, but Ahmed at least climbed back and now says that while itā€™s still hard to talk about, ā€œI survived and now this little guy is my gift for survival.ā€

Star Wars was amazing for Adam Drivers career. Everyone saw him manfully try to carry the movies on his back despite them being an incoherent mess. Exactly nobody blames him for the mess. Heā€™s not doomed to be associated with the role forever (in the way Daniel Radcliffe is with HP) any more than being Han Solo doomed Harrison Fordā€™s career.

Saw the movie today. Didnā€™t see the doom and gloom everyone here described but I wasnā€™t emotionally invested. Seemed entertaining and I was able to suspend disbelief enough that the stuff Iā€™m sure other people hated didnā€™t bother me.
