Star Wars - The Rise of Skywalker

I went in with low expectations, and somehow it was even worse.

JJ Abrams has never had an original thought enter his head.

Wasn’t great but I enjoyed it. The ending was pretty flat. One scene in particular got audible groans from a bunch of people. If you’ve seen it, you know the scene. I hated it.

Haven’t seen it but this is pretty savage

I’m sure everybody’s seen this but just in case somebody hasn’t…

Decided I wasn’t going to watch it and just read the plot on wiki instead and holy shit that is one terrible plot. Anyone who isn’t going to watch it I highly encourage reading the wiki page summary. I’m guessing if you go see it the special effects and stuff kind of mask how terrible it is.

It’s legit one of the worst movies I’ve ever seen.

The pacing is atrocious. They basically tried to cram in a half tv season worth of plot. The first act it feels like there’s an edit every 3 seconds. The plot is full of a couple dozen holes that basically nullify everything that’s ever come before it, specifically all of TLJ. Adam Driver, by far the best part of the new trilogy, doesn’t say a line of dialogue in the last act. The movie feigns taking risks, only to undo them a few minutes later. It’s basically 140 minutes of big budget fan fiction (and not even good fan fiction).

If you liked TLJ and the “Kill the Past” theme, you will hate this movie. If you love fan service, perhaps you’ll like it. It’s roughly on par with GOT S8.

Does the Benicio del Toro show up again? What about the broom kid?

No. TLJ basically didn’t happen for the most part.

Yeah very good summary. I don’t mind fan service and enjoyed this about the same level as GOT S8, maybe slightly more though. Same sort of degree of enjoyed it, but wasn’t great, and not something I’d be really interested in watching again.

This had a lot more in common with GoT s8 than TLJ.

Like, are we going to ignore that

  1. Palpatine is Rey’s grandfather
  2. Palpatine is Anakin’s father
  3. time for Rey and Kylo to make out!!!

I guess JJ was like well it worked for Lucas…

I’m re-watching altered carbon. Which despite its flaws, is full of “oh wow, that’s really damn cool” set pieces.

So that got me thinking that the people who did that would be awesome with Star Wars.

Lo and behold!

So I thought TFA was dogshit, TLJ at least tried to be, I don’t know, something, this was:

Moderately better than TLJ but far short of anything I’d call good. Prequel III was way better (though still with many problems). General impressions:

  • slow
  • As they did such a shitty job of making me care about any of the characters, all of the reveals were meh. Actually meh is too nice. Kylo now good? Who the fuck is Kylo Ren anyway, you never made me care. Rey is Palpatine’s granddaughter is fine I guess, but the reveal was so flat.
  • Nothing spectacular action wise or lightsaber fight wise
  • Emperor returning also dumb, and she killed him too easily also, yawn.

These three movies were by far worse than the prequels, @ me when we’ve stopped doing spoilers

The movie was gorgeous. Like wow. I hate a lot of 3d movies and cheap sci-fi because you can spot all of the animated elements and the foreground/background layers of actors floating on green screens. This had none of that. The visuals were mostly flawless.

Leia’s animation was fantastic. Her skin textures have improved and they fixed the lip issues that were causing serious uncanny valley problems before. I hated the fact that she was in the movie, but from a technical standpoint I noticed several tricks they used very effectively.

I found myself swaying back and forth between restlessness and childish joy. There were a few delightful moments and several terribly cheesy ones to remind you that these are movies for children. So much fanservice. ugh. The ghosts made me groan.

Driver is a fantastic actor. I think the arc they had for his character was predictable but flowed naturally enough. I really enjoyed his voice acting. Finn was a very natural actor, too. Overall I enjoyed it enough. Not a great plot or dialogue but for a movie with this many manhours behind it I definitely felt I got my money’s worth.

Gives one an understanding for just how rare good filmmakers are, good artists in general.

Yes on Leia. With one exception.

The flashback of her lightsaber training with Luke was fantastic fan service. GOAT. Luke’s young face looks just like young Luke! And then they cut to young Leia and it is AWFUL.

At least Mandalorian is good.

OG trilogy, Rogue One, Mando, there are no other Star Wars films/shows.

I would say that with one or two exceptions, JJ Abrams is a great artist and great filmmaker. He understands concept, story, and character on a level I dream of. For him to swing and miss hard here and there is a feature IMO, not a bug.

On episode 7 right now. Give Favreau the keys to the kingdom.

I dunno his filmography other than that he’s done something for these last 3 Star Wars films.

There was never a chance at success for these films, and he readily failed as anticipated.

There’s a reason Empire Strikes back and Godfather Part 2 are considered the greatest sequels ever, because they’re peerless perfection… continuing to effort sequels was asking for trouble, even though completion of the 9 installment saga was something they’d do

turd after turd
