Anybody who calls out toxic star wars fans can fuck right offâŚand of course idiot star wars fans will target minorities and women with their rape and violence threats!! I mean you guys seem like âidiots on the internetâ, but I havenât seen any threats towards people just bc they made a movie you didnât like from you. Almost like these âtoxic fansâ are not just harmless idiots and absolutely deserve to be called out.
Who is saying they shouldnât be called out? Of course abusive behavior should be condemned. But criticism of a movie shouldnât be conflated with racist abuse. Kind of goes without saying, and people like Ryan Johnson or Kathleen Kennedy trying to draw attention to the bad behavior of a few assholes are transparently trying to inoculate themselves from criticism.
This was a post in the shitty movie details subreddit:
In Star Wars: Episode IV: A New Hope (1977) Luke, Han and Leia are trapped in garbage that will eventually kill them all. This is foreshadowing of how garbage the Sequel Trilogy is.
Maybe you misinterpreted my âso whatâ. I donât think that doesnât matter, I think it doesnât have any bearing on whether TLJ is a good movie or Rose Tico is a good character.
There are two ways to interpret the causation here:
Racist, misogynist incel fanboys just inherently hate the inclusion of a woman of color in their space knights nerd movie and this motivated their vicious attacks against Kelly Tran
TLJ sucks as a movie and Rose Tico sucks as a character, which in the case of me and Keeed motivates us to write âthis movie and character suckâ on the internet and in the case of racist, misogynist incel fanboys, motivates them to viciously attack Kelly Tran, because thatâs who they are.
The difference is not that 2 constitutes a âdefenseâ of this behaviour, the difference is that 1 seeks to write off criticism of TLJ or the character as being motivated by racism/misogyny. If you want a political analogy, itâs like criticism of Israel and anti-Semitism. Itâs obvious that criticism of Israel is often expressed as virulent anti-Semitism, often directed against Jews in general, but you canât thereby write off all criticism of Israel as motivated by anti-Semitism, as the Right frequently try to do. Of course anti-Semites are going to express all criticism of Israel as anti-Semitism; thatâs who they are.
In Phantom Menace, it was revealed Anakin was an immaculate conception.
A Darth Vader comic book showed him reaching into the dark side to see the truth of his conception. It turned out the Emperor manipulated the midi-chlorians so as to conceive Anakin. His true heir born of the Force.
But the author recently said LOL. This was a vision given to him by the dark side. Can you really trust it?
So we are back not knowing where Anakin really came from. His mom said he was an immaculate conception. I honestly prefer to think he was force-conceived by the Emperor than that he just spontaneously birthed into existence.
I may as well be a 9/11 truther when it comes to this, because I suspect the author meant this but is now backpedalling hard at the bequest of Disney.
Finished the movie finally. I have to agree with Red Letter Media on this. This whole trilogy has been a waste. They never really tried to tell a coherent story other than a retread of the beats from the first trilogy without the soul that make the first on good. If this trilogy disappeared would it really be missed?
I can understand not wanting to deviate too much from âthe formulaâ. So go ahead, write in something about the Empire getting another big bad weapon. Just donât make it another death star. Go ahead, write in another big bad Sith person behind everything. Just donât make it the exact fucking same person that was for all intents and purposes killed in Episode 6. That is what ruins this new trilogy for me.
Randomly re-watching the opening sequence of Rogue One for no particular reason and man, itâs so choice. Gorgeous effects and visuals and all but ultimately itâs all about two forceful actors squaring off with great dialog. The bad guy is so deliciously evil --it reminds me of Tarantino at his absolute best. For real, just watch the first ten minutes of this movie and let it suck you into the world itâs creating. I donât know how Disney fucked up episodes 7-9 so badly, there is so much potential to be had in this storytelling universe.
Ten minutes into Rogue One and itâs like jeez I hate this Nazi asshole bad guy so much, heâs so creepy and palpably evil. Iâve watched episodes 7-8 of the new Star Wars trilogy and I donât even know who Iâm supposed to root against. I guess thereâs the distant hologram Smoke guy or the doofy redhead? I think they blew up an entire fucking planet in episode 7 but man, that guy at the beginning of Rogue One is so much more terrifying.
Rogue one is the only newish Star Wars movie that doesnât suck really bad on rewatchs.
They need to stop with the fan service bullshit , stop making everything so damned connected and stop bringing dead characters back. Sure Darth Maul , Palpatine, Boba Fett and whoever else were pretty cool characters but bringing them back for the quick cameo sucks and is terrible story telling.
Agree on all points, although a big chunk of Rogue One was fan-servicey too, and some of it did land for me (loved how they used the Red/Gold leader footage to insert them into the Scarif battle, Leia at the end was cool), while other stuff like the two Cantina dudes randomly showing up was dumb. Anyway I think that stuff is way more palatable and comes off way less pandering when it comes in the context of a good movie.
I respect Johnsonâs attempt to change things up, but IMO he not only didnât stick the landing, he faceplanted. I donât give him any bonus points for the degree of difficulty he attempted.
