Star Wars - The Rise of Skywalker

Right. Cuz making a bad kids movie a bunch of adults have invested way too much of their lives in is totally the same as attacking actors who had the gal to take a job while being a minority/female.

The big takeaway is how hard it is to pull off a trilogy, even when you have hundreds of millions of dollars. Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings deserves a ton of credit for getting an ambitious project done properly.

One thing has nothing to do with the other. You want to say SW fans are dumb to be too invested in SW? Totally fair. Maybe you’re right. But attack them for their/my actual faults, not because someone else they have nothing to do with was racist or sexist to John Bodega, Kelly Tran, or Daisy Ridley.

You minimized toxic/racist/misogynist fans because (you claim) Johnson didn’t respect you enough when making TLJ. That’s the fault I’m “attacking” you for.

The fuck are you talking about? As I said, one thing has nothing to do with the other. Johnson’s movie sucked. Racism towards actors is bad and pointless. One thing doesn’t excuse or mitigate the other.

Jesus christ dude. You literally linked them by comparing the contempt shown by racist/toxic fans to actors with Johnson’s “contempt” to you/SW fans by making TLJ. Read your own fucking posts.

You’re being ridiculous. Of course Johnson showed contempt for fans with TLJ, again it’s dripping from every frame. That’s obvious and the fact that some awful people were awful to Tran has nothing to do with that. I said that it makes no sense to blame toxic fans for the TLJ backlash. It doesn’t, any more than it makes sense to blame Putin or whoever else Disney is trying to blame these days.

I am 100% in agreement with Keed on his ROS, TLJ and fan culture takes.

If you honestly think Johnson showed contempt for you, you’re an idiot, but that’s fine. Stop bringing it up in conversations about toxic fans if they are unrelated as you’ve now tried to backtrack into claiming.

I didn’t bring it up. That dumb NYT article brought up the Russian bots, Putin, and the last Jedi. Again, read my posts.

I enjoyed 9 as a viewing experience (mostly). Only the chewbacca thing took me out of the story at the time.
On reflection, the story just doesn’t hold together well. So much unexplained or unexplored. They should have pushed it back a year or two.

I liked 8, and didn’t get the hate. Could have been improved, but was miles ahead of 1-3

How many people here are old enough to have lived through the original series (4-6) in it’s original run? Born in 69, so was perfect age. Had a friend who saw 4 and 5 dozens of times. Probably only 4-5 times for me.

Part of the wonder was that we had no idea how they did the effects. Shit was real. The only thing I can compare it to is the TRex in Jurassic Park. And that was only 1 animal. Star Wars was like 2 hours of unbelievable shit.
I do remember being spoiled for Empire. Didn’t see it the 1st weekend and a kid at school told everyone.

LotR had at its base the core material that had captivated multiple generations. In that regard, Star Wars 4-6 was a much bigger deal, making a compelling trilogy ex nihilo.

That’s our stuff, mang. Born in 71. Had the figurines. Still have all their accoutrements saved in a little Vader tin, though a younger sibling destroyed all the action figures. lol

we were wee little tykes, 6 and 8, just strapped-in for the Goat ride

Also born in 71. Just old enough to watch ANH that summer and just be viscerally amazed by it, even if I didn’t totally get every aspect of the plot until rewatching it a year or two later. Sometimes it does make me wonder how much of my love for the OT is rooted in the way it felt to watch it as a kid…I mean I can acknowledge parts of the writing and acting in them that are bad, but it still “works” for me in a way that makes me feel like the whole is greater than the sum of its parts somehow. Or maybe the OT is just bad too and I can’t see it.

The Nytimes reporter brought up botting as it related to the toxic, racist and often political social media response to the film. You strawmanned him and used it as an excuse to bash Johnson and minimize racists/misogynists on the internet. I’m done explaining your own posts to you.

All generous thoughts for most of the Star Wars movies, especially A New Hope, but Empire Strikes Back is legitimately a great movie.

Keeed has basically perfect takes on SW to date (haven’t seen ep 9 yet so idk about that). Kelly Tran was fine, I can’t really say more than that, like I have no idea whether she is a good actress or not, because she had to play a pointless and poorly-drawn character written into a bad script. Of course idiots on the internet take that out on her, so what?

thank god

They didn’t take out “bad writing” on her. The “criticism” was horribly racist and misogynistic. She left social media because she was tired of rape threats. Rabid incel fanboys drove her off, and any defense of that makes me a little bit nauseated.
