There was some coverage in the traffic cameras suck thread.
Cursed mileage on that highway (666.6)
Most rural roads in the Northern Territory are now 130km (80mph). For decades they were unlimited.
These are dead straight, completely dry, completely empty, high quality roads. You normally pass another car going the other way every 30 minutes or so.
Its pretty common for locals to do those roads at 180/190 k (110 to 120 mph). Sustained for hours on end.
Speeding on highways (particularly freeways) isn’t a real problem in and of itself. The problem is all the jokers who then proceed to drive that fast in town.
Wow. TIL.
I’d like to take this time to remind people to use their cruise control on long highway stretches. If you don’t I hate you, sorry
I think it’s because they drive on the wrong side of the road.
Short personal story: my therapist was killed by an out-of-control speeding driver in a McLaren in downtown Los Angeles in May 2020.
Early last May, Larry Brooks told his wife he was going for a walk in the Arts District. He left their loft about 11 a.m., and soon after, his wife, Anna Marie Piersimoni, heard sirens. Then the police knocked on her door.
Brooks, a 68-year-old psychologist, had been struck and killed by a speeding McLaren sports car, a roughly $280,000 vehicle designed to go as fast as 200 miles an hour. The 23-year-old driver, a student, was arrested and charged with reckless driving and vehicular manslaughter.
That jaywalking law saving loads of lives.
Ban F-150’s so ‘hoods’ don’t hit heads, redesign trucks so the drivers can see pedestrians, lower the speed limit to 20mph in pedestrian heavy zones and the US could halve that road death rate over the next 20 years or so.
churchill are you still pissed about 1776 or something? Holy fuck. Give it a rest.
Churchill just saw a spot to troll, instigated by a new account which is a total coincidence I’m sure. That’s all this is.
Road accident deaths often only involve one car and none of the occupants of the car are killed = headasplode.
I’m glad Goofyballer is on the case though
I thought he was implying that a car hitting a pedestrian doesn’t count as a crash.
Road accident deaths can happen where there is no ‘crash’? To be a road accident death, someone must die. Which is why your pickup to car death ratio is irrelvant. What percentage of pedestrians die when hit by a pick up at 30mph? If you remove all bumpers from a car, cause their useless anyway, how many more pedestrians survive a 30mph impact? Lots is the answer, maybe half, especially kids
If you think he’s a troll you should stop feeding him - isn’t that the excepted wisdom?
And I think it was you who integated by saying how much you enjoyed speeding through NYC.
I would be quite curious to know which Manhattan highways it’s safe to drive 90 mph on. Maybe in Queens, but there really aren’t any true highways in Manhattan. Really only straight stretches I can think of are FDR - but that is pretty narrow and curves quite a bit (I think the speed limit there is maybe 45 mphs) - and the West Side Highway, which IIRC has stop lights on most of it that are timed for 50 mphs and don’t see why you’d take West Side Highway to get to Queens. I guess you could gun it on Park or one of the other avenues, but then you have lights timed for 30 mphs.
I really can’t think of anyway in Manhattan that it’s safe to drive close to 90 mph.
I am referring to road traffic deaths. You came wading in with ‘crashes’ and rural roads.
Wait till you folks hear about the time I drove a Ford station wagon 90 mph down a highway covered in 6+ inches of packed snow near Erie, PA.
I’ve also done > 120mph in west Texas and western Colorado.
Temp-ban for trolling, since Churchill clearly isn’t this stupid.
