seities Walrus Quickie reveal thread

As I said earlier, the two songs I just revealed were originally on the podium for me. As I listened to the entries more and more though something changed. I had a kinda immediate bias against these next two songs where I just didn’t expect to like them so much. More and more though these two were getting stuck in my head and I was looking forward to them coming back up again in my listening sessions. Given the spirit of this category I feel comfortable with how the rankings worked out. But, I’ll probably have a different opinion in a week…

Nonetheless, on with the Walrus!

SkyDiver8 - Garth Brooks - We Shall Be Free

Note - this is a fan bootleg since this song isnt on youtube officially, nor on spotify.

When I saw you had submitted a country sound I was all like:

ohnobaby

But this bold choice totally paid off. There is no way this sends me digging through Garth Brooks catalogue but it’s a great message and really easy on the ears. While I don’t know a thing about Garth Brooks I have to think the lyrical content was a big risk for him given what I presume to be common political/moral leanings among a sizeable portion of his fanbase during this time. I feel like I could hear this song a lot and not get tired of it. Well played, SkyDiver8!

Goat Pyatnitski - The Pipettes - Your kisses are wasted on me

Also that sound quality sucks so here is a spotify link

Here we have Pyatnitski sharing some of his inner sassy minx. He told me when submitting that he likes to play this while dancing in front of the mirror, and while I could have done without the video evidence I did appreciate him opening up to me.

It’s fun, it’s catchy, it’s just good stuff. It’s also girl band, which if you have paid any attention to my submissions in other Walruses is a long way from my more common musical tastes.

I shared that in confidence!

RiskyFlush - Alison Krauss - Jacob’s Dream

A sad tale put to song, it was Krauss’ voice that first hit me about this. It’s sad, haunting and beautiful all at the same time. I also like the purity of taking an event/happening and putting it to song to preserve for future generations. Also, this is nowhere near something I would usually have on my playlist. Nice one, RiskyFlush.

Holy shit, I literally just sent this song into @Jalfrezi as my submission for his “Track featuring a female vocalist” category. I hit send, opened up this thread, and thought some shit had glitched, lol.

Maybe we have too many Walruses running?

Suffice it to say, @cassette, I like your submission here! Hopefully jalfrezi will let me send him something else for his Walrus (though I was happy with this choice!)

lmao, for some reason this one song of his hits me just right. Otherwise, no thanks.

I’m old enough to remember when this came out and radio stations refused to play it. I think that’s the only reason I ever listened to it in the first place.

Everyone’s “song from genre you don’t usually like” being from genres I usually like explains a lot. I already knww and like songs from FKA Twigs and SHAED, Metallica song is obviously great, haven’t listened to Garth yet, Don’t Waste your Kisses is awesome, and I love Alison Krauss although that’s admittedly a type of music I wouldn’t normally listen to. I was hoping to submit her for a future walrus although I haven’t listened to the few songs I know from her in forever, just think she has an incredible voice.

Yeah - If anyone else sang that song I’m pretty sure I’m not putting it in first. I’d never heard her sing before so it really got my attention.

oh seities…you sweet summer child.

Please do me a favor and go listen to Raising Sand. It’s a Robert Plant/Alison Krauss collab and one of the most gorgeous albums of the past 20 years. Won a grammy for album of the year, I think.

I know, you’re thinking “wtf alison krauss and robert plant…no” but trust me it works. This is the playlist…it might be genre-bending for you, but try it.

Robert Plant was definitely into other genres moving into country. There are a few countryish songs in later Zeppelin albums and then Plant did rockabilly/R&B with the Honeydrippers.

I keep reading this as gender-bending and getting confused. Also yeah this is the kind of stuff I like from her so far, thanks!

The third particularly. His move to rockabilly was a retrace to his roots. He went through a period in the 90s when he couldn’t even listen to his own recordings with Zep because he found them so verbose. He toned it down a lot for the Krauss collaboration.

She didn’t even sing for quite a while. got her start as a fiddle prodigy… Here she is at 15, winning contests.
