SARS-CoV-2: Electric Superflu

They shut down all traffic into McCarran (Las Vegas) due to an air traffic controller testing positive and a shut down of the ATC tower. So, this is one risk you face if you fly during this period.

I mean he’s sent rockets into space and built a car so he has the chops to do it, but dude just STFU and do it. I don’t hear the Ford CEO prancing around, and they said they’re ready to go

Australia has closed the borders. Permanent residents, citizens and their family members only.

My whole team is still working from the office.

I pulled a list of higher risk people and had a plan to have them doing some kind of work from home.

Top of the risk list was a 72 year old man with diabetes.

Guess who doesn’t have the internet at home?

Anyways. He’s now getting paid leave from tomorrow. Fuck it.

This is tremendous news. There are some things not to like about it, notably $135 a test, but that can be worked out several different ways from a policy perspective. The most important thing is getting our national testing capacity way past 250K/wk, and this is proprietary, whereas as a people we’d obviously rather have them share this around for the good of humanity. Maybe we can hope for them to contract other similar companies to make more and give them a cut? Obviously they want to make a killing on this, given the setup.

The main good things about it are: when they send these 30K tests out and get back 5-10K positives per week, it’ll apply a ton of pressure to the feds to get their shit together with testing. Also, if they got it this quickly, surely several other companies will be able to follow suit within a month or so. This means that our society is going to have an easier time getting back to a new normal sooner rather than later. This means less economic pain, which means less of an increase in unemployment, which saves tens/hundreds of thousands of lives.

On a terrible day for me personally with a barrage of bad news, I am so grateful for this good news and this little piece of hope.

odds those tests even work? can’t help but think Theranos.

McDonald’s employs over 500k people and only a tiny fraction get paid sick leave. They were one of the biggest beneficiaries of the bill that excluded companies with more than 500 employees.

This is legislation the house democrats created.

WTF is going on in Israel @Yuv? This thread seems completely nuts:

Likud are refusing to allow the opposition to start the committees because, as the official stance, they might put arabs in charge of them.
Also the Mitch Mcconnell of the Israeli Parliament is refusing to have a vote cause they’ll vote to replace him. So why allow it? smart.gif

They are saying the quiet part out loud again.

95% or higher imo. I mean it’s not like they’re the only ones in the world who have made a test this quickly. Supposedly the ones in China cost $10 a piece and have a four hour turnaround time.

Shit, if the people running this company knew what we knew here about COVID-19 a month ago, they had a head start on their US competitors in all likelihood.

And their test works like any other, they just put it on a box and send it away. The only question I have is whether the average person will jam the swab far enough up their nose, given what I’ve seen from the process in South Korea.

yeah. I hadn’t even read her thread on twitter. did so after making the post. I am not a bright man

Don’t let this headline fool you, this is good news. Zero locally transmitted cases and they are testing everyone coming in at the airport and quarantining everyone for 14 days - real quarantine not Netflix and Quarantine at home.

This is what the next 12-18 months would look like in competent countries. Shut down 4-8 weeks, run down all contact tracing and contain until local transmissions hit zero, test everyone coming in.

It’ll be tougher in the US, but it’s not impossible.

Does Netenyahu really reckon he can leverage the virus to circumvent the election completely though? Just carry on as the hero Israel so badly needs at this time of crisis etc.

I got the flu last year for the first time in forever despite not getting flu shots. I felt so bad I actually went to the ER. Before I even got past the front desk, the receptionist shoved that Q-tip so far up my nose I thought it would come out through my eyeball. There’s no chance in hell that anyone can administer the test to themselves and do it properly if that is in fact the way you’re supposed to do it.
