SARS-CoV-2: Electric Superflu

He fucking better

Ineffective on severe cases but otherwise big if true. My only concern is that this will lead to Trump crowing, “My gut told me a solid flu vaccine would have an effect. CDC said no. Turns out I was right.”

I found out today my Dad needs surgery Monday. He’s 70 and in great shape for his age, always been very healthy, but he has an enlarged prostate causing a blockage in the urinary tract and the options appear to be surgery now or use a catheter for months - that’s a no go.

The procedure is relatively minor, but he does have to go under general anesthesia (which means he’ll be on a ventilator so hopefully they still have plenty - his area is not too hard hit yet) and stay one night in the hospital. My mother is 72, and she has a number of chronic non-life threatening health conditions that would likely significantly weaken her immune system.

My first thought was that she should not go inside the hospital unless there’s a major complication or something goes very wrong. Agree/disagree? I told my Dad he should let her drop him off and pick him up, and that’s it. He won’t be interacting with a lot of people, but she would be in a waiting room, using vending machines, etc, and she’s a habitual and consistent face-toucher and face/neck scratcher without realizing it, it’s basically constant.

Next question is do you think it’s a good or bad idea for me to go see them Sunday night? I can’t imagine not at least giving my Dad a hug before surgery - normally I’d be there in the waiting room the whole time, but they’ve been around a different set of people than I have and now all three of us are in risk categories, so any spreading would be bad news.

Next question is if I do that, should I just be the one to take him to the hospital?

I’m probably at the lowest risk of currently having it, given my precautions, but it’s not 0, given my rendejvous Saturday with the girl I’m dating. I don’t think going to the mail room is a notable risk, but I’ve done that, too.

We aren’t sure how long his immune system will be impacted by going under anesthesia, I told him to make sure to ask and obviously they are leaving home under NO circumstances for that amount of time, except for medical reasons.

And on that note he’s lost way too much weight lately, from 5’10 190 lbs to 5’10 165, with 16 lbs in the last 13 days, 7 of it from the blockage though… He’s been eating less since he retired, and I think that accounts for a pound a week, but that still leaves 7 lbs unaccounted for and that’s a lot to fluctuate in two weeks.

So he’s going to have a couple appointments coming up on that as well, while possibly immunocompromised.

Appreciate all ideas/thoughts on the best way to reduce all risks while also being there for him. He very rarely shows fear, like most men of that generation, but I can tell he’s very scared right now. I just want to be there for him in person and it feels like I can’t.

That may be the worst part. If something goes wrong and I can’t be there the way I normally would, I will never get over it. I’m trying not to think much about that right now, but it’s hard to completely block it out.

Forgot to add, she also said FEMA and some other agencies were basically telling governors to do what they need to do and not worry about reimbursement, meaning that they would get reimbursed on the back end.

A few days ago someone posted a tweet with NYC flu hospitalizations, showing that as of ~last weekend they had already spiked to peak flu season rates. Does anybody have updated data on this?

Boggles my mind how money always comes up in USA #1. Govt should have a blank check in times like this.

So apparently this thing went undiagnosed for weeks of spreading and people visiting. How is that even possible like a month (feels like anyway) after Kirkland? JFC

lol, MERS most likely originated in Saudi Arabia.

At some point if Trump tries to start a war with China - are we better off if the deep state just arrests Trump and all his enablers in Congress? I mean yeah we’ll be a military dictatorship for life after that. But it beats WWIII right? I’m losing faith in democracy by the minute.

Is there some kind of unfit for office diagnosis we can do quickly?

One of the guys on my trivia team also happens to own the bar and grill where the games happen. He is open and insists the game will happen as normal provided the host will show up and run it. fml

Because there’s never been a disease which came from eating cows. That would be mad, a cow disease…

But that’s Rudy Giuliani.

Would you go into the hospital or maybe sit in the car in the parking lot until you get word that he’s out of surgery and okay?

Yeah what’s goin on with that goblin? It worries me that I’ve heard nothing about him lately
