SARS-CoV-2: Electric Superflu

So the companies that make respirators and ventilators don’t make any without an order? And do they stockpile any? I don’t know anything about the business, but it seems they could have assumed there might be a demand for these when the coronavirus stories first started surfacing weeks ago.

Not exactly.

People get put in the ICU because they need to be in negative flow rooms, and they’re pretty much only present in the ICU areas - so you can be fairly “well”,meaning say hypoxic at 85 responding to nasal O2, but no where near needing a vent and still be stuck in the ICU because there is no where else to keep you. For example, my old ER had 92 beds - two were the appropriate negative flow types because they cost like sin and you “never” need them.

Hobbes - can you please start talking to your doctor friends about how China requires everyone to wear masks and the virus is probably contagious from your throat when you’re pre-symptomatic? And Japan is wearing masks like crazy and doing much better.

We need to take this thing to the top!

Don’t know about ventilators. But I read an article about respirators recently. There are so many more being made now because of the massive demand that they’ve reached a bottleneck caused by one of the key materials. Apparently this material is a fine mesh type substance that is very difficult to make and requires a fancy expensive machine to make. The machines themselves can take months to assemble, although China claims to be building them in a week or two now.

Ty. This might be the business to be in for a while. Now and in the future.

A medical device manufacturer has threatened to sue a group of volunteers in Italy that 3D printed a valve used for life-saving coronavirus treatments. The valve typically costs about $11,000 from the medical device manufacturer, but the volunteers were able to print replicas for about $1 (via Techdirt ).

Naturally.

Dunno what’s been going on at my old facility for the last 10 days ago - I do know that every patient gets screened/masked on arrival (AFAIK probably ignoring, say ankle sprains) - but Nevada is still way behind in terms of testing so far. No “unexpected” deaths that I’m aware of yet. Probably hear more on Fri. - the Gestalt is that the Nv. guv has been…passive.

Well when you’re getting treated. We gotta get hospital heads asking the CDC about this. Everyone should be wearing masks imo. China is smarter than us.

Everybody is smarter than us. Except perhaps the UK.

I’m sure the docs already know this. We need to get this message out to the regular folk out there.

Yep - which is why I want half my cash in Euros. The pound and dollar are both going down together if they go down.

the techdirt article is worth the read - as is most techdirt content (for those not familiar)

The industrial revolution and its consequences have been a disaster for the human race

Well the CDC is still saying only wear a mask when you’re symptomatic, which is not what China is saying or Japan is doing. I want to know why. If it’s because there aren’t enough masks, don’t want to start a panic - but they plan to get a ton more masks and put it in place before the unlockdown things - that will make me feel much better.

But when I hear they’re still using if you traveled somewhere as a screen, I worry they’re totally FUBAR.

Basically I want to know if the conversations between the Dr.s and the CDC go like this:

“You know that question about if you traveled somewhere is out of date, right? It’s everywhere now” “Yes we know. But we still don’t have enough tests so we have to keep it in place.”

Or like this:

“You know that question about if you traveled somewhere is out of date, right? It’s everywhere now” “Hey GFY, you’re just a lowly doctor. We’re the experts here. (click)”

If it’s the second thing, we need to start a media campaign about the masks now.

We (kind of) have enough masks for health care workers and will pretty quickly build up an inventory for them soon, but it’s gonna be a while for the whole population to get masked.

I don’t think this has been posted. The SARS-CoV virus was shown to attack the brain in some cases, and these researchers say SARS-CoV2 could do the same, leading to the sudden onset of respiratory failure.

https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1002/jmv.25728

  • Some coronaviruses can invade brainstem via a synapse‐connected route from the lung and airways.
  • The potential invasion of SARS‐CoV2 may be one reason for the acute respiratory failure.
  • Awareness of this will have guiding significance for the prevention and treatment.

Surgical masks or N95 or both? Citizens only need surgical and hell they can make their own if necessary.

Although Americans are bad at that so I get not wanting to start a panic.

At least she apologized. Mistakes were made.
