SARS-CoV-2: Electric Superflu

Bush and Reagan conservatives who didn’t succumb to Trumpism are infinitely more inline with establishment Dems than Trump right now. I really hope most of them aren’t taking Mitch up on it.

I feel like we could see some kind of party re-alignment in our lifeftimes. Maybe with a brief period of 3 parties - deep state/stablisment, Trumpism, and democratic socialism (just please don’t name the party that ffs - the nazi parallels are too easy and stupids fall for it).

Anybody else have a toddler? We’re both working from home and yanked our 18 month old out of daycare. Work is still on both of us to get shit done.

It’s fucking awful. We’re working on scheduling but basically the best we can come up with is someone takes the morning (usually 6am-12) and the other takes the afternoon (usually 2pm-7pm). Then we both work after she goes to bed to make up for the missed hours.

Just a shitty situation because the daughter is moody due to teething and tensions are already high on day 2 lol. Wife doesn’t want either set of parents coming over because who knows who they’ve been hanging out with so we’re just on an island. This is gonna be rough.

A 74 year old prisoner in France has died of coronavirus. Don’t worry though, he was only put in prison on the 8th when he probably already had it and was in solitary.

I mean, you might ask why France is sticking 74 year olds who are old and very vulnerable with health problems (not my words, the words of the justice ministry) in prison, but it may have worked out for them.

Same, or will be from next week as we’re on ‘holiday’ at the moment. I have some flexibility as I work for myself and can, to some extent, say take-it-or-leave-it, but my wife’s work is being typically difficult—saying “of course we realise some of you have childcare to think of”, but then using euphemistic corporate speak to imply that they expect all deadlines met on all projects. It will be rough and that arrangement (half days plus the evening) seems about all one can do.

Strong point.

The COVID-19 coronavirus epidemic has a natural origin, scientists say

This evidence for natural evolution was supported by data on SARS-CoV-2’s backbone – its overall molecular structure. If someone were seeking to engineer a new coronavirus as a pathogen, they would have constructed it from the backbone of a virus known to cause illness. But the scientists found that the SARS-CoV-2 backbone differed substantially from those of already known coronaviruses and mostly resembled related viruses found in bats and pangolins.

Lakers all getting tested tomorrow. The nets said they paid for their testing with a private company.

Which still begs the question WTF?

We have back to work since the beginning of March, except the workers who visited Wuhan or stayed in Wuhan on CNY holidays.

Here in China, everyone put the highest notice and follow the
advice like wearing masks, don’t stay close, wash hands frequently, take body temperature several times everyday and stay at home as possible. I think it’s not that bad as I imagined before, seems everything is under control and we feel safe.

From DaveT on 22 with a guy he does business with.

Masks man. Everyone needs to be wearing them now. Surgical is fine if not use a bandana. Something has to be better than nothing. People don’t understand - it’s not for you, it’s to protect others from you.

Yeah gonna be a hard sell with the most selfish generation. But we have to do it.

I just realized I haven’t showered since Sunday. Or maybe Saturday. I’ll be completely feral by the end of the week.

Best friend’s mom is in a hospital in Osage beach.

Fine Sunday morning by Monday morning terrible cough, can’t breathe, 104.2 fever.

They won’t test her because she hasn’t traveled but she’s negative for everything else so they are going to treat her as though she has it.

Doing that could possibly really **** up the statistics

The dr told him that if they aren’t tested they aren’t a statistic

This is ridiculous.

How the fuck are we still using if you have traveled or not as a test criteria? We know it’s everywhere. This gives me zero confidence they are on the ball about the new evidence that asymptomatic people are contagious.

Easier said than done.

Yep, it’s tough. There’s a Corona and Kids thread over in Sundry Chitchat. Good luck.

There’s a coronavirus and parents thread. I haven’t posted in it because things in our household haven’t been too crazy as of yet but I except that to change after a couple weeks.

It’s not that hard. I ordered 100 surgical masks for me and 100 my Dad after all this started. Mostly I just wanted to keep him calm and I figured if he runs out I can send him mine.

You can use anything if the primary goal is not to spread. People have bandanas. You can re-use them too.

I didn’t order any then because the health experts said they do more harm than good. I’m just assuming there is no chance to find any now.

The health experts have always said to wear them if you have symptoms.

Anyway we can start a govt program to make sure everyone has a box or two. It can be done I’m sure. China has a lot more people than us and they all have masks.

We just have this policy that I am fairly sure is running the SARS playbook and hasn’t updated to the new information about the way this virus spreads. In Asia it’s been the culture for a while for people to wear masks in cold and flu season. So it’s probably not tough for them to get hyper-vigilant and wear a mask all the time. They probably don’t even know if they’re protecting themselves or others.

I was thinking what type of effects this might have, too, today. Friend sent me a like about how the water is clear in Venice and swans have returned for the first time in forever or something like that. It seems like this kind of crazy pause has a chance to open a lot of people’s eyes to a lot of things that modern existence makes us miss.
