SARS-CoV-2: Electric Superflu

How does no one in Trump’s press conferences over the past month have it?

Oh I get they are all testing “negative” if they even getting tested. But you’d think you would see them coughing up a storm or looking like shit. These press conferences last an hour+ each day. No way you can hide a cough that long.

I found the rather grim expert paper interesting, especially compared to international estimates. Unfortunately only a few quotes made it through the media, but medical experts are warning about tens of thousands of potential deaths in Austria (quoted up to 100-120k in some sources) unless spread can be further reduced soon.

To put that into context, the lower end of 10k deaths in Austria would per-capita translate to about 400k deaths in the the US. And that’s in a country with relatively early and robust handling, low mortality rate so far and a fairly solid healthcare system that hasn’t been overrun yet.

Phase I clinical trials in September means that even if it works, we’re not getting it for mass consumption till like 2022. GJGE.

Hey DeSantis, welcome to the party.

I mean it makes sense. Spanish Flu was 3 years. Black Plague was decades. Turns out global pandemics wreak havoc. Who knew?

But I thought it would be gone, "like a miracle it will disappear?”

‘World was warned of global pandemic’

The former director general of the World Health Organisation (WHO), Dr Gro Harlem Brundtland has been talking to BBC Radio 4 about what she says is the lack of “preparedness of the world” for a global pandemic.

Mrs Brundtland, who was the first female prime minister of Norway, is co-chair of the WHO and World Bank’s Global Preparedness Monitoring Board, who published a report in September 2019 warning of a “highly lethal pandemic”.

“What we have now is a warned catastrophe," she said.

“We saw big alarming gaps in the preparedness of the world and found compelling evidence of a very real threat.”

“It’s not too late but we have to deal with the fact we are already in this now, which means putting emphasis on mobilising funding and (placing) attention on getting the equipment that is needed."

I haven’t seen that. Do you have a link?

Absolutely not a death cult, not a chance.

The River Church in Tampa was packed to the gills with worshipers who clearly were looking for hope. Pastor Rodney Howard-Browne , who presides over the megachurch and has been reportedly defiant over social distancing, has claimed he’ll cure coronavirus just the way he did with Zika

The Pastor boasted his place was white-glove clean, saying, “We brought in 13 machines that basically kill every virus in the place, and uh, if somebody walks through the door it’s like, it kills everything on them. If they sneeze, it shoots it down at like 100 mph. It’ll neutralize it in split seconds. We have the most sterile building in, I don’t know, all of America.”

Howard-Browne said on March 17, "We are not stopping anything. I’ve got news for you, this church will never close. The only time the church will close is when the Rapture is taking place.”

They are complete idiots. That entire church is going to be a plague zone. This little choir group had 2/3 of their participants get sick after one practice. They met before things were locked down and before a single case had been reported in their county. They also were standing apart from each other rather than in a tight group.

I wonder if he’s due to be bequeathed something from a significant number of his parishioners.

You can only find a few quotes from it in the media, apparently APA has the full expert paper it and this was also the basis for today’s additional measures. Unfortunately the paper itself hasn’t been made public.

Also interesting, they’ll test a representative sample of 2000 Austrians to get a better idea of hidden infections. Results are expected until the end of the week.

From derStandard:

Kleine Zeitung quotes up to 120k deaths:

Not that us poker players didn’t know that a majority of people are bad with number, but this pandemic is putting a lot of people’s mathematical shortcomings on full display.

An exchange I saw yesterday went something like this.
-Person A: the global death rate is almost 5%.
-Person B: No it’s not! It’s only 0.046%!
-Person A: source?

  • Person B: *posts screenshot from WHO showing death rate of 0.046 and the numbers (~580k infected 27k deaths) to back up his claim
-Person A tries to explain how to do math and that 0.046 means 4.6%
-Person C attacks person A for being wrong.

People are so, so dumb.

Austria to impose basic face masks in supermarkets

Austria will make it compulsory for the public to wear basic face masks in supermarkets in a bid to slow the spread of coronavirus, Reuters news agency reports.

The masks, which Chancellor Sebastian Kurz admits are below medical grade, will be handed out as early as Wednesday.

“As of the moment these masks are handed out in front of supermarkets, it will be compulsory to wear them in supermarkets,” he says.

The medium-term aim, he says, is that people will wear them in public more generally.
