Through tax legislation when things are cool, bailouts when the coolness hits the rocks and stock buyback shenanigans etc, the 1% are really, really smart at sucking off the taxpayers teat by buying up and owning as much of Congress as they can - and it clearly works. You know the corporate Dems are complicit when they don’t shout this obvious shit from the rooftops.

But seriously - these things can’t just spring out of a vacuum. It takes years to meat-tenderize people’s brains before you can move on to the next step. In the 70s if Walter Cronkite told you something happened, it was generally accepted. The R base didn’t just decide CNN was the enemy overnight. It took a few years of Trump’s constant drumbeat.
I read some quote from Hitler about how it took a decade of “priming the pump” basically with antisemitic propaganda for him to do everything he wanted. Children’s books, newspapers, etc. By the time he came to power it was already entrenched, as the base for the next step.
I think about that a lot. CNN/MSM = lying, evil is entrenched right now. It’s the base for killing freedom of the press. Which opens the door for everything.
When I see newspapers and sites fall one by one to vulture capitalists, I think about how my old boss told me it happened in Russia - Putin’s buddies bought out all the oppositional media one by one.
We’re that close to Bezos, AT&T (!) and a few other companies refusing to sell out right now. Once one major outlet falls it gets harder for the rest to hold out. As horrible as the NYT is, it’s still a bulwark against fascism.

Man I am done with my fucking roommates. I’m sharing a house w/ my buddy and his wife. They both work in restaurants. My buddy was laid off on Saturday. His wife still works.
She’s been coughing a few days so today she tried to take her temperature w/ a thermometer. She claims it’s off by 5 degrees. So I calibrate it and it works fine. I have her take the temperature. I go in my room b/c it takes a few minutes and what not. I come out and ask how her temperature is.Entire process is probably like 45 minutes but that’s because I’m trying to get a legit reading. She’s all annoyed b/c I interrupted her game w/ her husband about checks notes Celebrity 20 Questions. Fuck them. I hope they get the virus and gave me the house in the will. JFC man.
Oh and she’s a restaurant manager coughing her ass off. In Florida. It’s not like she’s infecting anyone.

I should stop tracking this every day because it’s very bad for my mental health, but the death toll is not slowing down at all. We’re hitting 10k for sure, we’re going to be super, super lucky if it levels off at 50k.

Yes. 3 = 1,000, 4 = 10,000, 5 = 100,000. We’re on track to reach 100,000 dead within 18-23 days if this doesn’t slow down.

So from my quick googling a bad flu season is 60k deaths from October to March generally - with the peak usually in Feb but most of the badness from Dec-March.
That’s mostly packed into about 4 months. Let’s say my totally unsubstantiated guess of 3-5x a bad flu season for 18 months is in the ballpark. So we’ll do 4x = 240k dead over 4 months. But for 18 months = about 1.1M dead in the US.
Jesus. Maybe a summer pause means only 750k dead.
