SARS-CoV-2: Electric Superflu

All the “muh, the economy!” Bro’s in this thread are no different than the flu whataboutists two months ago. You’re wrong, history will prove you wrong, and your level of incorrectness is astonishingly stupid.

So when does the First CoronaVirus Atomic War kick off?

Like I don’t know man, pointing out that the pain, human misery, and death that comes with economic downturns can be very significant, and that keeping the economy shut down could conceivably cause a lot more pain and death than it saves seems reasonable to me. I don’t have the expertise in any field to know what the answer is and neither do you. Likely no single person has the relevant expertise to be able to judge what should be done. Are there epidemiological economists? If so we need to give that guy a call right away.

Give everyone money.

I solved it.

Need a quick “Am I An Asshole” check. My mother in law had planned to come help us move apartments in a couple weeks but I am not letting her come due to the obvious. She lives 5 hours away in Missouri and still is going to work in a courthouse everyday. Told the wife and her that it’s not just for our safety, but it’s the socially responsible thing to do.

Spain sees record 514 deaths in one day

Healthcare workers make up nearly 14% of confirmed cases in SpainImage caption: Healthcare workers make up nearly 14% of confirmed cases in Spain

It’s another dark day for Spain with a total of 39,763 cases of coronavirus confirmed across the country. Another 6,582 infections have been announced in the past 24 hours and the number of deaths has now reached 2,696.

The capital Madrid continues to be the epicentre of Spain’s pandemic, with 1,535 deaths. The north-east region of Catalonia is now also becoming a big cause for concern with 1,939 cases in the past day, higher than Madrid.

Health emergency chief Fernando Simón has stressed that almost 3,800 people have now recovered from the virus but 2,636 remain in intensive care.

“This is a tough week and we are all hoping to see if we are managing to reach the peak and start going down, with these very aggressive measures that have been imposed on Spain”.

Attention has also turned to the alarming rate of infection among health professionals. Of the 39,763 infected people around the country, 5,400 are healthcare staff - meaning they make up nearly 14% of those with the disease.

The government has asked MPs to extend the state of alert to 11 April.

Late to the party, but the hammer and dance article used this awesome epedemic calculator with very reasonable assumptions (possibly even conservative ones) to arrive at ~10 million dead in the US. That’s direct and indirect deaths (i.e. people dying from cardiac arrest because the health care system functions at a fraction of the current, already non-optimal rate).

I’d respectfully request that no one feeds this nonsense and take the thread to where it is invariably going, but I know it’s a waste of time.

Correct

I despise Trump, but I am genuinely in awe of how he’s going to, somehow, get the Democrats to wear the responsibility for what could be the worst economic catastrophe in American history, which is directly attributable to colossal blunders that he personally made, and is on video bragging about, just by saying something crazy at a press conference. It’s probably literally the death knell for American democracy, but something in me is just drawn to the beauty of seeing craft and artisanship practiced at that level.

Or just let them be expired for a little until shit dies down? I drive around with expired tags like every year (I’m doing it right now!), only been stopped once for it and got a warning but even if they issue a citation I believe the fine is ~$100

Summer Olympics officially postponed to 2021

Would you agree that part of the problem is that we have structured our economy in such a way that is especially vulnerable to shutdowns? Our lack of strong social safety nets and decent, equitable access to healthcare combined poor worker protections amplified the harm caused by situations like this. Then, if you consider the primary justification for structuring our economy this way was the largely false assertion that our economy was better off structured like this, it becomes pretty fucking stupid to use “Economic harm!” As justification for continuing with business at the cost of hundreds of thousands of lives as opposed to a restructuring of fundamental aspects of our economy that have made us this vulnerable in the first place.

There is nothing wrong taking economic effects into account when analyzing how to respond to this. There is a myriad of options between do nothing and full on lockdown and both hospital load/death rates and economic effects should be taken into account when analyzing those options

So the government needs to get money in the hands of its citizens. True. The government could also consider getting weed into the hands of its citizens. Time to break into the federal stash. Create jobs. Raise revenue.
