I may get lambasted for saying this but I think the sports score ticker coverage in the media, and itt, is really not healthy. Why is it important to know exactly how many cases there are every minute of the day in every region of the globe? This was important when we are trying to convince everyone this was serious but certainly everyone itt is past that. Now the ticker updates seem unhealthy and frankly kind of morbid.
My initial reaction would be that the numbers are what we use to create the curve. WIthout them how would we know its trajectory and whether or not it is being flattened?
A couple friends of mine own a great restaurant in St Augustine, The Floridian. They have stayed open and are offering carry out service to people. They seem to have their shit together and they have always done right with their staff, so I think it’s going to be a case by case type of thing.
The rising casualty numbers turned public opinion against the Vietnam War. The drumbeat of cases and deaths may be annoying to us, but repetition will be a drumbeat banging against Trump louder and louder as the numbers go up. It might be annoying to you, but it may be what works to slowly turn people against Trump.
I think understanding the slope of the infection curve is important. It gives an idea of whether or not what we are doing is working or not, although there is a 14 day lag. I think that’s fine to discuss. It’s interesting and useful. I agree that the raw numbers of dead and sick is not as useful, but you can’t figure out the slope without the raw data.
Second oldest population on earth and they all live in Northern Italy (epicentre). Also terrible management (governmental and societal) of the crisis has exacerbated the death rate I’m sure.
I agree with this, for me its more a question of how the info is presented. Is it presented to inform or to provoke an emotional response/ increase ratings?
This is fair but I guess my point is more is it healthy for us, or maybe I should just speak for me. I am doing everything I have in my power. I am sitting on my couch all day. Now that I have done that, I question the psychological value in following exactly how many cases there are for the average joe like me.
The question I ask myself is how can this info be presented to maximize anti-Trump propaganda value. At this point, I’m wired to view everything even vaguely political through this lens.
Anti-Trump lens is way too narrow. It has to be anti-Republican party at the very least, but even better, is what AOC is doing and amplifying the massive systemic weaknesses of our social safety nets created by a societal culture that places individual self-interest above everything.
I have read some dumb stuff on 22 about the virus but that has to be the dumbest thing I have read. It has almost no correct information about the virus and what is happening and it uses Kirstie Alley as a co-defendant.
